How to choose a certification

Which certification fits your goal?

  • Scrum Master knowledge: PSM I. Scrum.org's Scrum Master assessment. No course is required: you buy an attempt, take the online test, and the certification does not expire.
  • Instructor-led Scrum Master learning: CSM. Scrum Alliance's Scrum Master credential. You attend a required 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer, then take a short test. Choose it if you want instructor-led learning with a group.
  • Scrum product ownership: PSPO I. Scrum.org's Product Owner assessment, covering product value and backlog decisions. Like PSM I, it needs no course and does not expire.
  • Agile across approaches: PMI-ACP. PMI's agile certification across Scrum, Kanban, Lean and hybrid delivery. You need 21 hours of agile training and agile experience: two years on the standard route.
  • Working in a SAFe environment: SAFe Agilist. Covers leading an organization that runs SAFe. Most candidates take the two-day Leading SAFe course, which includes two exam attempts. Choose it when your organization uses SAFe.

What to know before choosing

  • Course-based and exam-based routes differ. CSM requires a course and renews every two years; PSM I and PSPO I need no course and do not expire. Compare the full cost, including training and renewal.
  • Practice with a real team. Facilitation, product decisions and team improvement take practice with a real team alongside learning the framework.
  • Pick one starting credential per role. PSM I and CSM cover much of the same ground, as do PSPO I and CSPO. Take a second one when an employer asks for it or it fills a real gap.
