Business analysis credentials cover understanding needs, defining requirements and working with stakeholders. IIBA's three levels follow experience: ECBA for newcomers, CCBA for practicing analysts and CBAP for experienced analysts. PMI-PBA covers analysis within project work.

How to choose a certification
Which certification fits your goal?
- A foundation in business analysis: ECBA. IIBA's entry credential for people new to business analysis. There is no experience requirement.
- Established analysis practice: CCBA. IIBA's credential for practicing analysts. It requires 3,750 hours, about two years, of business analysis work.
- Extensive analysis experience: CBAP. IIBA's senior credential. It requires 7,500 hours, about five years, of business analysis work in the last 10 years, plus 35 hours of professional development and two references.
- Business analysis in project work: PMI-PBA. PMI's business analysis certification, covering needs assessment, requirements management and stakeholder work in projects. It also has a business analysis experience requirement.
What to know before choosing
- Experience counts by the work, not the title. Experience is counted by the analysis work you did, such as requirements, process modeling and stakeholder work, so it can come from roles without analyst in the title.
- Analysis, project and product roles differ. Business analysts clarify needs and evaluate solutions, project managers run delivery and product managers decide what to build. If your work is mainly delivery or product decisions, look at project management or product management credentials.
- Practice producing useful analysis. Use your preparation to produce a real artifact, such as a process model, a set of requirements or an options analysis, and be ready to explain your reasoning.
