How to choose a certification
Which certification fits your goal?
- US public accounting: CPA. The US license for public accounting. You pass the CPA Exam and meet your state board's education, experience and ethics requirements, so follow the rules of the state where you plan to be licensed.
- A professional accounting qualification: ACCA. A global accounting qualification combining exams, an ethics module and practical experience. Recognition and practice rights depend on the country where you work.
- Investment analysis: CFA. Three exam levels covering investment analysis, valuation, portfolio management and ethics. To earn the charter you also need 4,000 hours of qualifying work and CFA Institute membership.
- Management accounting: CMA. Two exams on financial planning, analysis, control and decision support inside organizations. You also need a bachelor's degree or accepted certification and two years of relevant experience, which you can complete after the exams.
- Personal financial planning: CFP. For advisers who plan finances for individuals and families. In the US, CFP Board requires approved coursework, a bachelor's degree, the exam, planning experience and an ethics review; other countries have their own certifying bodies.
What to know before choosing
- Start with the jurisdiction. Licenses, protected titles and permitted work depend on local rules. Choose the route recognized where you plan to work.
- Budget for the whole route. These routes combine exams with education, experience, membership or renewal requirements, so the exam fee is only part of the total cost.
- Specialist certifications add skills. Courses and certifications in areas such as financial modeling or risk add a specific skill. Roles that require a license or charter still need that qualification.
