How to choose a certification

Which certification fits your goal?

  • Scrum product ownership: PSPO I. Scrum.org's Product Owner assessment on product value, the backlog and working with a Scrum team. No course is required, and it does not expire.
  • Instructor-led product ownership: CSPO. Scrum Alliance's Product Owner credential. You earn it by completing a 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer; there is no exam. It renews every two years.
  • Product ownership in SAFe: SAFe POPM. Scaled Agile's credential for product owners and product managers in SAFe. Most candidates take the two-day POPM course, which includes two exam attempts. Choose it if your organization runs SAFe.
  • Broader product management: Pragmatic Institute. Pragmatic Institute's training-based certification in market-driven product management: customer problems, market opportunities and product planning.

What to know before choosing

  • Product owner and product manager roles differ. Scrum and SAFe credentials cover the product owner role within a delivery framework. Discovery, market strategy and pricing are covered by broader product management training such as Pragmatic Institute.
  • Exam or course. PSPO I is an exam you can take without a course; CSPO and Pragmatic Institute certifications require training. For a course, check the assignments, feedback and attendance requirements.
  • Choose learning you can use. Pick learning you can apply to a real product: customer interviews, a problem statement, prioritization or a product decision.
