Choosing the right ASQ certification

Where to start

  • Six Sigma basics: ASQ Yellow Belt. Foundational exam on DMAIC basics, for people who support improvement projects led by Green or Black Belts. ASQ sets no education or experience requirement.
  • Running improvement projects: ASQ Green Belt. Covers DMAIC and basic statistics for people who run or support process-improvement projects. ASQ requires three years of full-time paid work in the body of knowledge.
  • Leading complex projects: ASQ Black Belt. Combines DMAIC, applied statistics and team leadership. It requires two completed projects with signed affidavits, or one project plus three years of full-time paid work, and ASQ does not require a Green Belt first.
  • Quality auditing: ASQ Certified Quality Auditor. For people who plan, conduct and report quality system audits. ASQ requires eight years of full-time paid work, three of them in a decision-making role, with education waivers that reduce the total.
