How to choose a certification
Which certification fits your goal?
- Understanding the framework: TOGAF Foundation. The Open Group's entry-level TOGAF exam (Part 1) on the concepts and terminology of the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition, especially the Architecture Development Method. There are no prerequisites.
- Applying the framework: TOGAF Practitioner. The applied, scenario-based TOGAF exam (Part 2). Take it after Foundation, or take the combined Part 1 and Part 2 exam if you are starting out.
What to know before choosing
- Enterprise architecture is broader than technical design. It covers how business needs, capabilities and information systems fit together across an organization. If your work is designing systems on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, a cloud architecture certification fits better.
- Use TOGAF 10 material. The current exams are based on the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition. TOGAF 9 holders can take a shorter Bridge exam to reach Practitioner.
- Practice on a real question. Connect a business goal to capabilities, constraints and an architecture decision, and practice explaining the trade-offs to stakeholders.
