How to choose a certification

Which certification fits your goal?

  • Project management foundations: CAPM. PMI's entry-level certification. It needs no work experience, only 23 hours of project management education, and covers predictive, agile and business analysis basics.
  • Experienced project leadership: PMP. PMI's certification for experienced project managers. You need two to five years of project management experience, depending on your education, and 35 hours of training.
  • A defined project method: PRINCE2 Foundation. The entry exam for PRINCE2, the process-based method widely used in the UK, Europe and the public sector. There are no prerequisites, and it is required before PRINCE2 Practitioner.
  • Agile delivery across approaches: PMI-ACP. PMI's agile certification across Scrum, Kanban, Lean and hybrid delivery. You need 21 hours of agile training and agile experience: two years on the standard route.

What to know before choosing

  • Check eligibility before buying preparation. PMP and PMI-ACP require experience and training hours. CAPM and PRINCE2 Foundation have no experience requirement.
  • Match the method to the workplace. PRINCE2 is widely used in the UK, Europe and the public sector. Check which methods appear in job postings where you want to work.
  • Separate project, program and product work. Running one project, coordinating a program of related projects and deciding what product to build are different jobs. For product decisions, see product management certifications.
