Summary
PgMP is PMI's credential for program managers who coordinate several related projects to deliver benefits. It recognizes program-level experience, assessed through written experience summaries that a panel of PgMP holders reviews and then a 170-question exam.

What holders say
Mainly validates experience you already have, more than it opens doors
Holders see PgMP as late-career: by the time you meet the experience bar, employers rarely ask for it by name. Several pursued it for development or to round out a PMP.
Job postings barely mention it, and most recruiters don't know what it is
PgMP rarely appears in job listings, roughly 1 posting per 100 mentioning PMP. Hiring managers who know it may weigh it slightly, but HR screening built around PMP won't flag it.
A minority describe it changing hiring outcomes or pay directly
Most reports of career impact are muted. A few say it mattered: one was PgMP-eligible alongside competing six-figure offers, and another sees more postings asking for it at senior level.
No. An active PMP replaces the project management experience requirement, but you can instead document 36 to 48 months of project experience. You always need separate program management experience.
What is the PgMP panel review?
PgMP-certified volunteers assess the program experience summaries in your application. If they reject it, you can revise and resubmit once. A second rejection closes the application and refunds the exam fee.
Can I take PgMP online?
No. The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE test centres.
Is PgMP worth it?
Holders mostly describe it as recognition of experience they already have. Job postings name it far less often than PMP.
How long does PgMP take?
PMI says the application, panel review and exam take about 60 days. Most candidates add several weeks of study once the panel approves them.
