Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) Courses

Validates knowledge of fraud schemes, financial transactions, investigation techniques, relevant law and fraud prevention and deterrence.

A good CFE course covers all three exam sections: fraud schemes and financial crimes, investigations and the law, and fraud prevention. We compared the ACFE options on materials, practice questions, format and price.

Most people should start with ACFE's Silver package, which includes the Fraud Examiners Manual the exam is written from and about 1,400 practice questions. Choose Gold for the condensed study guide, and the Virtual Review Course when your employer pays for live review.

Poor fit if you want live instruction rather than self-study; choose the Virtual CFE Exam Review Course

Poor fit if the Silver package's lessons and questions are enough for you; choose Silver

Employer-paid live review

Great fit if your employer is paying and you want live instruction before sitting the exam

Poor fit if you are studying the material for the first time; choose the Silver package

How to choose a CFE course

  • Buy materials for the June 2, 2026 exam. The exam is now 310 questions in three separately scored sections. ACFE advises against study materials from before June 2026, and ACFE's own course is written from the same body of knowledge as the exam.
  • Start from the Fraud Examiners Manual. The manual is the source for the exam, and both the Silver and Gold packages include it online and as a PDF.
  • Check the practice volume. Silver includes nearly 1,400 study questions and about 800 flashcards. You sit three sections of 120, 120 and 70 questions, so you need enough practice to cover all of them.
  • Use live review after you study. The Virtual CFE Exam Review Course is three days of review that follows the Prep Course. It reinforces what you studied and does not teach topics from scratch.

Recommended CFE course combinations

  • Lowest cost: Silver package ($899 for members) and ACFE's free 90-Day CFE Exam Challenge, a monthly study plan for members.
  • Want a short summary: Gold package ($1,150 for members), which adds the condensed CFE Exam Study Guide to the Silver materials.
  • Employer pays: Silver package, then the Virtual CFE Exam Review Course ($1,685 within two years of a Prep Course purchase, including the exam application fee).
  • Already work in fraud examination: Silver's 1,400 questions first to find weak sections, then the manual for those sections only.

CFE course FAQ

What is the best CFE course?

For most people, ACFE's Silver package. It includes the Fraud Examiners Manual, more than 500 lessons and nearly 1,400 study questions. Gold adds a condensed study guide.

Is there a free CFE course?

ACFE's 90-Day CFE Exam Challenge is free for members, but it is a study plan that guides you through the paid Prep Course, not a course on its own.

How long does a CFE course take?

The Prep Course is self-paced with a one-year access period. Plan for about 80 hours of preparation across the three sections, from 50 hours if your work already covers fraud to 110 if not.

Does the Virtual Review Course replace the Prep Course?

No. It is a three-day review of what you have already studied. It costs $1,685 if you bought a Prep Course in the last two years and $2,285 if you did not.
