Validates knowledge of security operations, including alert and log analysis, vulnerability prioritization, incident handling and reporting.
CySA+ tests whether you can detect, analyze and respond to threats as a security analyst. Expect logs, alerts, scan output and incident scenarios rather than definitions. Learn the objectives with one course, practise reading real tool output, then use timed tests to find gaps.
1Understand the exam
Syllabus
1.0Security operations34%
1.1Explain concepts related to system and network architecture in security operations.
1.2Analyze indicators of potential malicious activity.Scenario
1.3Use tools to determine malicious activity.Scenario
1.4Explain threat intelligence and threat-hunting concepts.
1.5Explain the importance of efficiency and process improvement in security operations.
1.6Summarize concepts related to the use of AI in security operations.
Example scenario: An EDR alert shows an Office document starting an encoded PowerShell command on a finance laptop. Which data would you collect before deciding whether to isolate it?
2.0Vulnerability management26%
2.1Implement the appropriate vulnerability scanning method.Scenario
2.2Analyze output from vulnerability assessment tools.Scenario
2.3Analyze data to prioritize and mitigate vulnerabilities.Scenario
2.4Explain concepts related to control types, risks, and vulnerability management.
Example scenario: Two critical findings arrive on the same day. One is on an internal test server; the other is on an internet-facing web server with a public exploit. How would you order the remediation work?
3.0Incident response and management24%
3.1Summarize concepts related to attack methodology frameworks.
Example scenario: A ransom note appears on a file server at 2 a.m. What would you do first, and which systems would you check for the same activity?
4.0Reporting and communication16%
4.1Explain the importance of vulnerability management reporting and communication.
4.2Explain the importance of security operations and incident response reporting and communication.
Example scenario: Executives want a one-page summary of this month's vulnerability work while engineers need the full list. What would each report include?
Choose the best answer from the options, or the stated number of answers when a question asks for more than one.
CertUp example
Several failed logins hit one account within a minute. Which log field best shows whether they came from a single source or many?
Source IP address
Event ID
Timestamp
Session length
Show answer
A. Grouping the failures by source IP address shows one attacker or a spread across many addresses, which separates brute force from password spraying.
Analyze logs, scan results or tool output in a simulated environment and complete an analyst task, such as identifying an attack or choosing a response.
CertUp example
A web server log shows this request returning many records: GET /items?id=5' OR '1'='1. Choose the attack and the best fix.
SQL injection, fixed with parameterized queries
Cross-site scripting, fixed with output encoding
Directory traversal, fixed with a longer password
Denial of service, fixed with a bigger server
Show answer
SQL injection, fixed with parameterized queries. The quote and OR '1'='1' change the database query, and parameterized queries stop input from being treated as code.
2Make a study plan
Read the objectives and test yourself on a short set of questions. Choose one main course, then spend the rest of the time on tool output, scenarios and review.
Most candidates spend 50–100 hours. Plan for the low end if you already work in a SOC; plan for the high end if logs and scanning are new to you.

3Learn the core conceptsWork through one main course or book, topic by topic.48 h
4Practice with mock examsTake timed practice tests and review every mistake.24 h

3Learn the core concepts
Use one complete CS0-004 course as your main resource and the objectives as your checklist. Add the Sybex guide if you prefer reading.
Work with real tool output. Read sample SIEM alerts, run a free vulnerability scanner against a home lab, and map one incident to MITRE ATT&CK as you study each domain.
4Practice with mock exams
Use fresh questions to find weak domains, then review why each option is right or wrong. Practise PBQs that ask you to read logs or scan results, and take full timed tests before booking.
A September 2026 CS0-004 pass report says reading logs was the key skill and found the multiple-choice questions harder than the PBQs. Another candidate, who passed on a third attempt, points to log inputs and outputs, MITRE ATT&CK, the Diamond Model and scan types.
Candidates who saw both versions describe CS0-004 as more hands-on, with some questions on AI in security operations and on application testing such as SAST and DAST.
People moving on from Security+ note the overlap in fundamentals and recommend spending study time on SIEM and EDR tooling, vulnerability workflows and incident response.
