Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) Practice Tests

Validates foundational knowledge of Scrum principles, the Scrum framework and Scrum Master responsibilities for serving teams and organizations.

The CSM test is 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, open book and taken online after your class. We compared the main options on alignment with Scrum Alliance's learning objectives, question volume and price.

Most candidates need little practice. Scrum Alliance says to use only practice exams written for its learning objectives: start with a free full-length set, add a Scrum Guide quiz if you want more, and pay for a bank only if you want volume.

CSM-aligned mock exams

Scrum Master Mock Exams (on demand)

Four set mock exams plus a randomised one, with over 230 possible questions covering the topics in Certified ScrumMaster training. Made by a Scrum Alliance training firm, which is the kind of set Scrum Alliance recommends.

Great fit if you want free practice built around the CSM class content rather than generic Scrum trivia.

Poor fit if you want a single 50-question, 60-minute run you can start without enrolling (see Simplilearn).

Free timed full test

Free CSM Practice Test

A 50-question, 60-minute set that copies the real test's size and clock. You can pause it and retake it, and explanations appear after you finish.

Great fit if you want a quick, free full-length run that mirrors the real test's size and timing.

Poor fit if you want questions written strictly from Scrum Alliance's learning objectives; Simplilearn describes its set as aligned to the Scrum Guide, so add the Agile Centre set.

Scrum Guide check

Scrum Open

Thirty questions drawn at random from a larger pool, built for Scrum.org's PSM exam but testing the same Scrum Guide. It is more about definitions than facilitation scenarios.

Great fit if you want a quick check of Scrum Guide knowledge before or after class.

Poor fit if you want CSM-style questions on coaching and facilitation; use the Agile Centre set instead.

Large question bank

CSM Exam Prep question bank

An independent bank of 1,000+ CSM-style questions with explanations across the three learning-objective areas. Ten sample questions are free; the 50-question timed simulation needs the $49.95 plan or higher.

Great fit if you want a large paid bank and a final timed simulation beyond the free sets.

Poor fit if you have just finished class; candidates call the open-book test easy, and the free sets above are enough for most people.

What to look for in a CSM practice test

  • Written for CSM, not only for the Scrum Guide. Scrum Alliance warns that many practice exams are not based on its learning objectives and will not help with the CSM test. Prefer sets made for CSM by a Certified Scrum Trainer over PSM-style Scrum Guide quizzes, which test definitions more than facilitation and coaching.
  • The same size and clock as the real test. The CSM test is 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes and needs 37 correct. A set with the same shape shows whether your pacing works; large Udemy sets of 120 to 160 questions per test are built for general Scrum Master exams, not this one.
  • Explanations, because the real test is open book. The test lets you use the Scrum Guide and your course notes, so the skill is finding and applying the right passage. A set that explains each answer and points to the Scrum Guide teaches that habit.
  • Volume matters less than for most certifications. Passers repeatedly call the CSM easy if you paid attention in class, and Scrum Alliance says you do not need to pay for exam prep. A paid bank is optional extra repetition, not a requirement.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual CSM questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items, not practice. Use products that write their own questions and explain every answer, so you learn the reasoning the exam tests.

How to use CSM practice tests

  • Finish the class and read the 2020 Scrum Guide first. The test checks what you learned in the two-day course and the Guide, so practice questions work best once you have both.
  • Take one free 50-question set under the 60-minute clock. Do it without the book at first to see where you are, then reopen the Guide and your notes to look up each miss.
  • Review misses against the Scrum Guide, not memory. Because the real test is open book, practise looking up the accountability, event or artifact behind each wrong answer. Scrum Alliance's guide adds a useful habit: ask whether the Guide states the point, only implies it, or does not mention it.
  • Use your two included attempts sensibly. The class fee includes two test attempts within 90 days, and each extra attempt costs $25. Take the test once you are comfortable rather than rushing, but do not wait for perfect practice scores.

CSM practice test FAQ

Are there free CSM practice tests?

Yes. Scrum Alliance does not publish one, but Simplilearn offers a free 50-question, 60-minute test, Agile Centre offers free mock exams written around the class content, and Scrum.org's Scrum Open is a free 30-question Scrum Guide quiz.

Is the CSM test open book?

Yes. Scrum Alliance says you can use the Scrum Guide, other written or online resources and your course notes. It is taken online after the class with no proctor.

Is the CSM test hard?

Passers describe it as very easy if you attended the class and kept the Scrum Guide open. It has 50 multiple-choice questions in one hour, and you need 37 correct.

Do I need to pay for CSM practice tests?

Not for most people. Scrum Alliance says you do not need to pay for exam prep, and some trainers include practice exams in their class package. Paid banks only make sense if you want extra repetition.
