Financial Risk Manager (FRM) Courses

Validates knowledge of financial risk measurement and management across market, credit, operational and liquidity risk, using quantitative methods.

FRM is two exams on risk theory and quantitative methods, so a good course teaches probability, valuation and risk models and gives you many problems to solve. We compared GARP's curriculum and three commercial packages on format, practice and price.

Most people should start with GARP's official curriculum, since the exam tests it directly and Part I is included with registration. Add AnalystPrep for video and a large question bank, Schweser for condensed notes, or Bionic Turtle for worked quantitative problems and forum help.

How to choose a FRM course

  • Start with the official curriculum. GARP writes the exam from its own readings, and Part I GARP Learning is included with registration. Part II costs $250.
  • Plan one part at a time. Courses are sold per part, and each part takes about 240 hours. AnalystPrep's lifetime package covers both parts for $799.
  • Build quantitative skill early. Put probability, statistics and valuation practice into the first weeks so later topics are easier to follow. Bionic Turtle's daily questions and forum focus on this.
  • Add one package, not several. A commercial course adds explanation and questions to the curriculum. Use one, then GARP's practice exams in the last month.

Recommended FRM course combinations

  • Lowest cost: GARP Learning (Part I is included with registration) and GARP's own practice exams, which are included too.
  • Video and a large question bank: AnalystPrep's Learn + Practice package ($499) with GARP's practice exams as a final rehearsal.
  • Quantitative help: Bionic Turtle's Basic package ($399) with its forum, plus GARP's practice exams.
  • Condensed notes: Schweser's Essential package ($499) with GARP's practice exams in the final month.
