GIAC Certified Enterprise Defender (GCED) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of enterprise defense, including hardening, detection, network and identity analysis, incident response and malware triage.

GCED is an open-book exam of 115 multiple-choice questions in three hours, with no CyberLive labs, spread over 12 objectives from hardening and detection to identity records and malware triage.

GIAC's own practice test is the one product worth buying, and two come with an exam attempt added to SANS SEC501. Use it to check your index and pacing.

GIAC GCED Practice Test

A full-length simulation of the GCED exam in GIAC's own exam engine, ending with a report of the objectives to revisit. The bank is small, so a second test repeats some questions.

Great fit if you want to test your index, pacing and the exam engine before you sit the real exam.

Poor fit if you want volume; the bank is small and repeats, so a second test adds less than the first.

What to look for in a GCED practice test

  • Prefer the engine you will sit in. GIAC's practice tests mimic the real exam and end with a report of the objectives to revisit. GCED has no CyberLive tasks, so the format is plain multiple choice, but only GIAC reproduces the engine and the wording.
  • Count the tests you actually get. Two practice tests come when you add the exam attempt to a SANS course such as SEC501; a standalone $999 attempt includes none, and a retake brings no new ones. Extra tests cost $399 each, and unused ones extend with your exam deadline.
  • Expect a small bank with repeats. GIAC says the same question can appear on more than one practice test, and none are real exam questions. One candidate saw repeats inside a single test and called the tests easier than the exam, so do not lean on the score alone.
  • Treat third-party GCED sets with caution. The Udemy GCED banks carry no ratings yet, and one lists exam domains and weights that do not match GIAC's 12 published objectives, which have no weights. They add volume at best.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual GCED questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. GIAC's exam integrity policy bans any use of exam dump sites and lets GIAC revoke your certifications and bar you from future ones. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use GCED practice tests

  • Build the index while you read. Log term, book and page the first time you meet it, tab each book and sort the sheet A to Z. Index the 12 objectives' tools and commands, such as Snort rules, as well as concepts.
  • Test the index with course quizzes first. Candidates say the SEC501 quizzes check your index without the pressure of a full practice exam. Use them before you spend a practice test.
  • Take the first test to find gaps. One candidate sat the first test without notes to gauge understanding, then the second with index and books. Note missed topics in your index rather than copying questions; printed practice questions are not allowed in the exam room.
  • Pace the second test like the exam. You have 180 minutes for 115 questions, about 94 seconds each. You cannot return to an answered question, but you can skip 10 to 15 and come back, so practise skipping long ones.
  • Do not read too much into scores. Candidates report 49% and 63% on practice tests and then passing with 77%, and 60%, 70% and 84% followed by a fail. Use the objective report to choose what to re-read.

GCED practice test FAQ

Are there free GCED practice tests?

GIAC publishes no free GCED sample questions or practice test. Its practice test costs $399, and two are included when you add an attempt to SANS SEC501. The SEC501 course quizzes are the nearest extra drilling.

Are GCED practice tests like the real exam?

Candidates are split. Some call GIAC's tests easier than the exam and note repeated questions, while others scored 49% to 63% on them and still passed. They are the best gauge of pacing and your index, not of your final score.

How many GCED practice tests should I take?

Two is the usual number: one after your first pass through the material and one when you feel ready. A third rarely earns $399 because the bank is small and repeats.

Does the GCED practice test include labs?

No. GCED has no CyberLive section, so the exam and its practice tests are multiple choice only.
