GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of digital forensics and incident response, including memory forensics, timelines, Windows artifacts and enterprise investigations.

GCFA is an open-book exam of 82 questions in three hours: tool-heavy multiple choice plus a block of CyberLive forensics tasks.

GIAC's own practice test is the only close rehearsal, and two come with an exam attempt added to SANS training. Third-party GCFA banks are small, so index your books and labs first and use the tests to check them.

Official exam rehearsal

GIAC GCFA Practice Test

A full-length simulation in GIAC's real exam engine, CyberLive tasks included, with explanations for missed questions and a star rating for each objective. The bank is small, so a second test repeats some questions.

Great fit if you want to test your index, pacing and CyberLive skills under real exam conditions before you sit the exam.

Poor fit if you expect the multiple choice to match the real exam; some candidates find the real tool-output questions harder.

What to look for in a GCFA practice test

  • Prefer the engine you will sit in. GIAC's practice tests run in the real exam engine and include CyberLive tasks. Candidates say the CyberLive part is very close to the real exam, and no third-party product reproduces the engine or the tasks.
  • Count the tests you actually get. Two practice tests come when you add the exam attempt to a SANS course such as FOR508; a standalone $999 attempt includes none, and a retake brings no new ones. Extra tests cost $399 each.
  • Know the format you are practising for. The exam is 82 questions in three hours, and one July 2025 passer counted 75 multiple choice and 7 CyberLive tasks. Candidates say the CyberLive tasks carry more marks than multiple-choice items and are the easiest points to win.
  • Judge third-party banks by their scope. Third-party GCFA banks are thin: the Udemy sets have few or no ratings, and one advertises more questions than it holds and a domain split that differs from GIAC's ten objectives. Treat them as extra drills only.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual GCFA questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. GIAC's exam integrity policy bans any use of exam dump sites and lets GIAC revoke your certifications and bar you from future ones. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use GCFA practice tests

  • Start the index on your first read. Log book, page and keyword as you go, tab each book, and sort the sheet A to Z. Index the tool and artifact names you would look up, such as Volatility plugins, rather than section titles; one passer kept roughly 430 entries over about 20 printed pages.
  • Keep the time rules and artifact lists handy. Candidates lean on the Windows time rules for timestamps and on NTFS attributes and journals ($STANDARD_INFORMATION, $FILE_NAME, $LogFile, $UsnJrnl). Put them on separate sheets or use the poster.
  • Index the labs separately. A lab index of around 60 rows across three pages, with the section, a short description and the tool, was enough for one passer. Do the labs twice, since you only need a feel for how each tool runs.
  • Use the first test to repair the index. Take it with your index open and note each question it did not answer by topic (GIAC forbids copying questions out). One candidate ran out of time on the last two CyberLive tasks in the first test because of a weak index.
  • Run the second test on exam rules and plan for labs. Use printed material only, keep about an hour free for the CyberLive block, and be ready to skip up to 15 multiple-choice questions and return to them. Do not take two tests in one day.

GCFA practice test FAQ

Are there free GCFA practice tests?

GIAC does not publish free GCFA sample questions. Its free CyberLive demo is a recorded walkthrough of the exam engine, and practice tests cost $399 each unless two come with your SANS course bundle.

Are GCFA practice tests harder than the real exam?

Reports are split. Several candidates call them about as hard as the exam and score within 10 points of it, while others found the real multiple choice harder, with more tool-output and timestamp questions.

How many GCFA practice tests should I take?

Two is the usual number, the pair that comes with a course bundle. Take the first to find gaps in your index and the second as a dress rehearsal on exam rules.

Does the GCFA practice test include CyberLive tasks?

Yes. GIAC says CyberLive content on the exam also appears on its practice tests. Candidates say those tasks match the real ones closely, so use them to practise your time on the lab block.
