GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA) Practice Tests

Validates practical skills in network intrusion detection, including packet-level TCP/IP analysis, tcpdump, Wireshark, Snort, Zeek and network forensics.

GCIA is an open-book exam of 106 questions in four hours: packet-level multiple choice on headers, filters and Snort and Zeek rules, plus CyberLive lab tasks. We compared the main options on official coverage, lab practice and price.

GIAC's own practice test is the realistic rehearsal and the best check of your index. The free third-party sets only drill topics, so use them early.

Free topic drills

SecurityPracticeTest GCIA free sets

Eight free 20-question timed sets: five mixed and three that follow GIAC's three GCIA areas. It is a quiz format, so it cannot stand in for the CyberLive labs.

Great fit if you want free topic checks on traffic analysis, Snort and Zeek, and network forensics before paying for GIAC's practice test.

Poor fit if you want a full-length timed run with the real exam engine and lab tasks; use the GIAC practice test.

Official exam simulation

GIAC GCIA practice test

A practice exam in GIAC's own exam engine that simulates the real one, ending with a report of the objectives to revisit. The question bank is limited, so tests can repeat questions.

Great fit if you want to rehearse the real engine, timing and open-book lookups, and find the gaps in your index before the real attempt.

Poor fit if you want a large bank to drill from; the bank is small and your tests run out when your attempt expires. Use the free sets for extra topic work.

What to look for in a GCIA practice test

  • Know the shape of the exam. GCIA is 106 questions in four hours, open book, with CyberLive lab tasks alongside multiple choice. GIAC lists 15 objectives, from IP headers, TCP and fragmentation to IDS rules, packet filters, SiLK and Wireshark, but does not publish weights.
  • Prefer the official test for realism. GIAC's practice test is the only one that uses the real exam engine and question style. Most candidates call it a close gauge, and several say the real GCIA runs a little harder.
  • Plan for a small official bank. GIAC says the practice bank is limited, so a question can repeat across tests, and it never includes real exam questions. Two tests come with an attempt added to SEC503, extras cost $399, and access ends with your exam deadline.
  • Treat third-party sets as topic drills. The free SecurityPracticeTest sets are short quizzes, so they cannot test your index at exam length or reproduce CyberLive tasks.
  • Practise the labs separately. Candidates say you need to be able to do every lab, not just copy commands, and that you must read packets in hex. No question bank replaces redoing the lab exercises.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual GCIA questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. GIAC's exam integrity policy bans any use of exam dump sites and lets GIAC revoke your certifications and bar you from future ones. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use GCIA practice tests

  • Build the index before the first test. GIAC says making your own index is what teaches you the material. Index each book as you read it, so the first practice test measures the index you will actually use.
  • Use test one as an index diagnostic. After one full pass of the books, take the first test and log every miss and every slow lookup. For each, decide whether the gap was knowledge or the index, then fix it and reread the objectives in GIAC's report.
  • Space the two tests out. Do not take both in one day. Take the second a few days to a week before the exam, with only your printed index and books, and make final index changes afterwards.
  • Practise pace, not just accuracy. Four hours for 106 questions leaves little time to look things up. Candidates advise skipping slow items and returning to them.
  • Put a lab cheat sheet in the index. Passers say to write out tshark syntax, mask and filter examples, and hex-to-decimal conversion in the back of the index, since the same lab scenarios come back.

GCIA practice test FAQ

Are there free GCIA practice tests?

GIAC does not offer a free practice test or sample questions for GCIA. SecurityPracticeTest.com has eight free 20-question sets, which are useful for topic checks but not a full-length rehearsal.

How much is the GCIA practice test?

GIAC sells each practice test for $399, and two are included when you add a GIAC attempt to the SEC503 course. A retake does not add new practice tests, and unused tests expire with your exam deadline.

Is the real GCIA harder than the practice tests?

Candidates mostly describe them as close, with scores landing near the real result. Several GCIA candidates say the real exam felt a little harder, so do not rely on one good practice score.

Can I take practice questions into the exam?

No. GIAC allows printed books, notes and your index, but hardcopy material that looks like practice or exam questions is prohibited, and nothing electronic is allowed.
