GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of access control, networking, cryptography, Linux and Windows security, cloud security and incident handling.

GSEC is 106 questions in 4 hours, open book with printed materials only. It covers broad security topics, from networking and Linux to cryptography and cloud, plus hands-on CyberLive labs.

Most people should use GIAC's own practice test, which runs in the real exam engine; two come with an exam attempt added to SANS training. Cheaper multiple-choice banks add volume only, so build your index first.

GIAC GSEC Practice Test

A full-length simulation in GIAC's real exam engine, CyberLive labs included, with explanations for missed questions and a star rating for each objective. The bank is small, so a second test repeats some questions.

Great fit if you want to test your index, pacing and CyberLive skills under real exam conditions before you sit the exam.

Poor fit if you want volume; the bank is small and repeats, so a second or third test adds less than the first.

What to look for in a GSEC practice test

  • Prefer the engine you will sit in. GIAC's practice tests run in the real exam engine and include CyberLive labs when the exam has them. Candidates call them close to the real exam, and no third-party product reproduces the engine or the labs.
  • Count the tests you actually get. Two practice tests come when you add the exam attempt to a SANS course such as SEC401; a standalone $999 attempt includes none, and a retake brings no new ones. Extra tests cost $399 each.
  • Match the exam version. GSEC has a new exam version from April 6, 2026, so most candidate reports and many bank listings describe the earlier one. Use GIAC's 26 published objectives to judge whether a bank covers what is tested.
  • Expect labs in a broad exam. One candidate counted 7 labs on a practice test, another did not expect the lab block to be so large, and a failed attempt in the threads came down to running short on it. Multiple-choice banks cannot rehearse that, and some stray outside the course: a 2024 candidate found Udemy GSEC questions on topics SEC401 does not cover.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual GSEC questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. GIAC's exam integrity policy bans any use of exam dump sites and lets GIAC revoke your certifications and bar you from future ones. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use GSEC practice tests

  • Start the index on your first read. Log book, page and keyword as you go, tab each book, and sort the sheet A to Z. The index printed at the end of the lab workbook is a reasonable base, but one candidate found some page numbers off and many entries unhelpful.
  • Use course quizzes to build it. SANS course quizzes give the book and page for each answer, which makes them a fast way to find gaps in the index before you spend a practice test.
  • Index the labs separately. Make a lab sheet per operating system with the command and one line on what it does. Candidates say the lab questions follow the workbook closely and that a clear lab sheet saves most of the time.
  • Use the first test to repair the index. Take it with your index open, note each question it did not answer by topic (GIAC forbids copying questions out), and re-read objectives with low star ratings. Do not take two tests in one day.
  • Run the second test on exam rules. Use printed books, notes and index only. One candidate who got 73% on the practice test still ran short of time on the exam's labs and failed, so rehearse the lab block at the end.

GSEC practice test FAQ

Are there free GSEC practice tests?

GIAC does not publish free GSEC sample questions. Its free CyberLive demo is a recorded walkthrough of the exam engine, and practice tests cost $399 each unless two come with your SANS course bundle.

Are GSEC practice tests like the real exam?

Most candidates say they are comparable, and several scored similarly on both. A few found the practice labs easier than the exam's because they followed the workbook so closely.

Is a third GSEC practice test worth $399?

In a May 2026 thread, a candidate with mid-80s scores on both included tests was advised against it because the bank repeats. Spend the time fixing your index instead.

Does the GSEC practice test include labs?

Yes. GIAC says CyberLive content on the exam also appears on its practice tests, and it recommends them to get used to switching between the question screen and the virtual machine.
