Train for long scenario questions.
A July 2026 passer found the situational judgment items long enough to lose focus, with several questions on one two-paragraph case. After ten full practice exams, three hours of concentration felt manageable.

Validates knowledge of operational HR across people, organization and workplace topics, plus situational judgment.
SHRM-CP tests whether you can apply HR knowledge and judgment in operational HR work. Most of the challenge is situational judgment: long workplace scenarios where several actions could work and you must pick the best one. Learn the BASK with one main resource, then practise many long scenario questions until you can concentrate for the full exam.
Half the scored questions test competencies and half test HR knowledge, and 40% are situational judgment items.
Example scenario: A director asks you to quietly adjust a candidate’s interview scores so a referral gets the offer. How do you respond, and who else needs to know?
Example scenario: Two team leads keep escalating the same scheduling conflict to HR. What would you do so they resolve it themselves next time?
Example scenario: A manager wants a new bonus plan because "morale is low". What information would you gather before recommending anything?

Choose the single correct answer to a stand-alone question on HR knowledge or the behavioral competencies.
An employee asks for time off to care for a parent with a serious health condition. Under US federal law, which leave may apply to an eligible employee?
B. FMLA leave covers care for a family member with a serious health condition. The other leaves cover different reasons.
Read a realistic workplace scenario, then choose the best of several possible actions; more than one may work, but only the best earns credit.
A manager tells you privately that an employee will be laid off next month and asks you not to tell anyone. The employee then asks you whether their job is safe. What is the best response?
C. It protects confidentiality without lying and sends the concern to the person who can address it. Denying knowledge is dishonest, and revealing the plan breaks trust.
Apply on SHRM’s site during the application period for your testing window, then book a Prometric appointment. For the December 1, 2026 to February 15, 2027 window, standard applications close December 24, 2026. SHRM audits some applications at random.
Take a short set of situational judgment questions first to see how well your instincts match SHRM’s answers.
Most candidates spend 60–120 hours. Plan for the low end if you work in HR and know the main HR functions; add time if HR is new to you, and keep plenty of that time for long situational judgment practice.
Choose one main resource built on the BASK, then move to scenario practice early. Expensive courses are optional; several passers used a book and a question bank.
Answer the SHRM way. Prefer actions that are proactive, fix the root cause, use data and involve the right people. HR guides others to solve their own problems rather than doing the task for them.
Most of your score comes from judgment, so practise with explanations and long scenario sets. SHRM also sells official Exam Preview sets built from previous exams.

A July 2026 passer found the situational judgment items long enough to lose focus, with several questions on one two-paragraph case. After ten full practice exams, three hours of concentration felt manageable.
The same passer missed practice questions they knew by not reading closely. They suggest finding the handful of key words in each scenario and question before looking at the options.
One 2025 passer saw no direct statute questions and felt their law memorisation was wasted. A December 2025 passer found the knowledge questions straightforward, with emphasis on learning styles, motivation theories and workforce planning.
