Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) Practice Tests

CISM is 150 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours. It asks for the best management-level decision, not the best technical fix, and from 3 November 2026 the exam follows a new outline that adds enterprise and security architecture. We compared the main options on new-outline coverage and price.

What to look for in a CISM practice test

  • Know which outline you will sit. Exams through 2 November use the June 2022 outline (domains weighted 17%, 20%, 33%, 30%). From 3 November the weights become 18%, 20%, 33% and 29%, with enterprise architecture and information security architecture added as content areas.
  • Bank labelled for that outline. ISACA updated its prep materials on 1 September, and its QAE page now lists 1,200+ questions. Pocket Prep's page still cites the 2022 outline, and Doshi's page names no outline, so extra banks suit the unchanged core better than the new architecture content.
  • Management-level answers. Questions reward the business-aligned, governance-first answer. CISSP holders and engineers report that answering like a problem-solver costs them, so look for explanations that name the manager's reasoning.
  • Explanations for every option. The QAE explains each wrong choice, which candidates value over a bare answer key. It tags questions by difficulty, from easy to expert.
  • Volume plus a second source. The QAE has two timed exams, so you will run out of fresh full-length tests quickly. Candidates who scored 90%+ on the QAE still failed twice, which is why unseen questions from another source matter.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual CISM questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. ISACA's terms ban receiving or possessing exam content before the exam and let ISACA invalidate scores and revoke your certifications. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use CISM practice tests

  • Start with the free quiz or a short diagnostic. Take ISACA's 10 questions or a first QAE set before you read, so you see the management slant and your weakest domain.
  • Review every explanation, including the ones you got right. Passing candidates stress why the other options are worse. Note whether the right answer is the governance, risk-based or business-aligned one.
  • Study the reasoning, not the bank. Candidates who failed with 90%+ on the QAE say they had learned the questions rather than the management mindset. After a first pass, do mixed sets and explain each answer in your own words.
  • Answer as the manager. Before choosing, ask what senior management would care about first. Candidates with technical backgrounds say this mindset shift mattered more than extra content.
  • Run two timed exams late, then stop memorising. The exam is 150 questions in four hours; one passer took a five-minute break every 50 questions and had time to spare. Judge readiness by explaining answers, not by repeat scores.

Are there free CISM practice tests?

ISACA offers a free 10-question quiz with explanations; you submit a short form to see your results. ISACA has no larger free bank, and free question lists elsewhere vary widely in quality.

Which practice questions cover the November 2026 CISM exam?

ISACA's QAE database is the bank ISACA updated for it. Pocket Prep's page cites the 2022 outline and Doshi's page names none, so they remain useful for governance, risk, program and incident content but are thin on architecture.

Is Pocket Prep enough for CISM?

Some candidates say it is, but most who compare the two say the QAE is closer to the exam and explains every option. Use Pocket Prep for short mobile sessions on top of the QAE rather than instead of it.

How many CISM practice exams should I take?

ISACA sets no number. The QAE includes two timed exams, and candidates who pass usually add one or two more from another source, reviewing every miss rather than retaking the same test.
