CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of security threats, protective controls, risk management and incident response across modern IT environments.

SY0-701 is up to 90 questions in 90 minutes: multiple choice plus a few performance-based questions (PBQs). Good practice matches its short best-answer scenarios and gives you some hands-on PBQ practice. We compared the main options on exam-style wording, PBQ coverage, question volume and price.

Most people should start with CompTIA's free 10-question sample. Add Professor Messer's exams for exam-style wording and Jason Dion's six exams for harder, higher-volume practice.

Security+ (V7) Practice Test

Ten questions from CompTIA with an answer key but no explanations, so you see the exam's real wording straight away. CompTIA's separate simulation demo shows how a PBQ screen works, though its task is not a Security+ question.

Great fit if you want to see CompTIA's own question style and the PBQ interface before spending anything.

Poor fit if you need volume or a timed full-length run; use Messer or Dion.

Free topic drills

Security+ SY0-701 Practice Tests

Quick multiple-choice tests with a score report at the end. The wording is plainer than the real exam's scenarios; use the SY0-701 section, as the page also lists retired SY0-601 tests.

Great fit if you want free checks on terms, acronyms and individual topics.

Poor fit if you need exam-style wording, PBQs or a timed full run; use Messer or Dion.

Exam-like wording

Professor Messer Security+ SY0-701 Practice Exams

Three exams written in the concise 'best answer' style of the real questions, with a reason for each answer. It is a PDF, so you time and score yourself, and its PBQs are easier than the real ones.

Great fit if you want wording close to the real multiple-choice questions at a low price.

Poor fit if you want auto-timed, auto-scored tests or realistic PBQs; use Dion or Boson.

Timed full exams

CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) Practice Exams Set 1

The most widely used paid set, with long scenario questions and feedback that points to the objective you missed. Candidates consistently call it wordier and harder than the real exam.

Great fit if you want many timed, full-length questions with objective-level feedback and can handle harder wording.

Poor fit if you want wording close to the real exam or realistic PBQs; add Messer's exams.

Tough final check

ExSim-Max for CompTIA Security+ SY0-701

A simulator with a study mode that shows explanations as you go and a simulation mode that follows exam timing. Boson makes its questions deliberately challenging.

Great fit if you want a tough final check with long explanations, or your employer is paying.

Poor fit if you are on a budget; Messer's $30 exams give closer wording and Dion gives twice the questions.

Study on your phone

Security+ SY0-701 Question Bank

Short quizzes and mock exams in an app, with a weakest-subject mode for targeted drilling. Candidates describe the questions as clearly worded and close in style to Messer's.

Great fit if you study in short sessions on your phone and want a large bank to drill by subject.

Poor fit if you want a one-time purchase or PBQ practice; use Messer's exams and CompTIA's demo.

Objective drills

CertMaster Practice for Security+ (SY0-701)

CompTIA's own question bank, with a readiness score for each exam objective. Reviewers find the tests harder and more awkwardly worded than the real exam, though some say it prepared them well for the PBQs.

Great fit if your school or employer provides it, or you buy it in CompTIA's exam bundle, where it costs little extra.

Poor fit if you would pay $209 on its own; Messer and Dion cost much less and are better liked.

What to look for in a CompTIA Security+ practice test

  • Match the exam code. SY0-701 is the current exam and stays available until June 11, 2027. CompTIA expects SY0-801 to launch on or around November 17, 2026, so if you will test on 701, buy products that name SY0-701, and expect fewer 801 practice tests at first.
  • Look for 'best answer' scenarios with explained distractors. The exam is up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, and most multiple-choice items are short scenarios with two plausible answers. Pick products that say why each wrong option is wrong, and expect the longer scenarios in third-party tests to run harder than the real ones.
  • Treat PBQ practice as a separate need. PBQs are simulations (for example firewall rules, log analysis or placing items on a diagram) and candidates say third-party PBQs rarely match what they saw. CompTIA's demo shows the interface, and Messer and Dion add practice PBQs, but none reproduces the exam's.
  • Make sure you will not run out of fresh questions. Small sets such as Messer's 270 or Boson's 270 questions are used up after one pass. Pair a small, exam-style set with a bigger bank such as Dion's 540 or Pocket Prep's 1,330.
  • Get scores by domain. The five domains carry 12%, 22%, 18%, 28% and 20% of the exam, so scores by domain or objective show you where to study, especially Security Operations at 28%.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual SY0-701 questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. CompTIA's candidate agreement counts using brain dumps as misconduct and lets CompTIA revoke every CompTIA certification you hold. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use CompTIA Security+ practice tests

  • Take one exam cold as a diagnostic. Start with CompTIA's free sample or a Messer or Dion exam before you study heavily, and read the explanations for the questions you got right as well as wrong.
  • Log misses by domain and objective. Write each miss against its domain (1.0 to 5.0), go back to that topic, then retest it. A weak domain shows up faster than one overall score.
  • Practise acronyms and ports separately. Candidates repeatedly say unfamiliar acronyms cost them marks, and ExamCompass has free acronym quizzes for this.
  • Do full timed runs late, with PBQs. In the last week or two, sit full 90-minute exams. CompTIA lets you skip a simulation PBQ and return to it, and several candidates say they did the multiple-choice questions first and the PBQs after.
  • Read your scores by product. Candidates say Dion, Boson and CertMaster Practice run harder than the real exam, while Messer's is closest in wording. Compare your results with that in mind and do not retake an exam until you have forgotten the answers.

CompTIA Security+ practice test FAQ

Are there free Security+ practice tests?

Yes. CompTIA publishes 10 free SY0-701 questions with an answer key, and ExamCompass offers 24 free 25-question tests with no sign-up. Use the SY0-701 sections, because ExamCompass also lists retired SY0-601 tests.

Are Security+ practice tests harder than the real exam?

Candidates usually say Dion's, Boson's and CertMaster Practice's tests are harder and wordier than the real exam. Messer's are closest in wording, but his PBQs are easier than the real ones.

How many Security+ practice tests should I take?

There is no official number. Most candidates in Reddit threads combine two publishers, commonly Messer's three exams and Dion's six, and review every miss rather than just retaking exams.

Do Security+ practice tests include PBQs?

Some include PBQ-style tasks, such as Messer's exams, Dion's 5-question PBQ set and CompTIA's simulation demo. The real exam's PBQs are simulations, and candidates say the practice ones rarely match them closely.
