What holders say
Strongest for people already doing bank compliance work
Compliance candidates say CRCM organizes knowledge they use daily, and one compares the effort to about half of a CPA. People without a direct compliance role report ABA questioning their eligibility.
Seasoned compliance officers, including one with 20 years in the field, describe failing after months of study because the exam tests judgment rather than rule recall.
Compliance and legal professionals in banking say CRCM covers what an in-house bank attorney needs and helped them get interviews. Its recognition is concentrated in US banks.
Three years of US compliance experience plus two ABA-approved training options within the last five years, or six years of experience in the last ten with three in the last five. Operational banking roles do not count.
How much does the CRCM exam cost?
$815 for members and non-members. A retake costs $500.
When can I take the CRCM exam?
In 2027 the windows are February, April, June, August and October, each with an application deadline about two months earlier.
What changed in the CRCM exam for 2026?
From June 2026 the outline has three domains, Core Compliance (37%), Foundational Compliance (23% primary and 14% ancillary rules) and Compliance Management System (26%).
Is the CRCM hard to pass?
Experienced compliance staff still fail it, usually on questions that ask for the first or best action. ABA does not publish a pass rate.
