Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect Expert credential artwork

Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect Expert (SC-100) Exam Guide

Validates expert knowledge of designing Zero Trust strategy, security operations, identity, compliance, and infrastructure, application and data security.

SC-100 tests whether you can choose the right security design for a business scenario, not how to configure a product. Study Microsoft's reference frameworks, review the products across all security areas, and practise case studies that ask for the best recommendation.

Syllabus

Design solutions that align with security best practices and priorities20–25%
  1. Design a resiliency strategy for ransomware and other attacks based on Microsoft Security Best Practices
  2. Design solutions that align with the Microsoft Cybersecurity Reference Architectures (MCRA) and Microsoft Cloud Security Benchmark (MCSB)
  3. Design solutions that align with the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure (CAF) and the Azure Well-Architected Framework

Example scenario: After a ransomware incident, leadership wants recovery to be the first priority in the new security plan. Which controls would you put first, and why?

Design security operations, identity, and compliance capabilities25–30%
  1. Design solutions for security operations
  2. Design solutions for identity and access management
  3. Design solutions for securing privileged access

Example scenario: A company must give contractors access to one SaaS app and one internal web app without creating full accounts. Which identity design would you recommend?

Design security solutions for infrastructure25–30%
  1. Design solutions for security posture management in hybrid and multicloud environments
  2. Specify requirements for securing server and client endpoints
  3. Specify requirements for securing SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS services
  4. Evaluate solutions for network security and Security Service Edge (SSE)

Example scenario: A manufacturer runs workloads in Azure, AWS and its own factory network. How would you give the security team one posture view?

Design security solutions for applications and data20–25%
  1. Evaluate solutions for securing Microsoft 365
  2. Design solutions for securing applications

Eligibility and booking

Required for the certification

One Microsoft security associate certification

Required

You must earn one of these three associate certifications as well as passing SC-100.

Identity and Access Administrator AssociateSC-300
Security Operations Analyst AssociateSC-200
Cloud and AI Security Engineer AssociateSC-500

Expert skills in at least one security area

Recommended

Microsoft expects implementation experience across identity, platform protection, security operations, data and AI, applications and hybrid infrastructure, with expert skills in at least one.

You can take SC-100 before or after the associate exam. Microsoft awards the Expert certification once you have both.

You can book SC-100 at any time. Sign in to Microsoft Learn with a personal Microsoft account and schedule with Pearson VUE from the exam page.

Make a study plan

This plan covers SC-100 only. Read the skills list and take the free practice assessment, then study Microsoft's reference frameworks and the products outside your own specialty.

Most candidates spend 50–90 hours. Plan for the low end if you already design security across identity, operations and infrastructure; add time if you have worked in only one of those areas.

Learn the core concepts

Use the official course and Microsoft's reference architectures. The exam rewards knowing when to recommend a product.

Think like an architect. For each product, learn which requirement makes it the right recommendation and which alternative it beats.

Practice with mock exams

Take Microsoft's free practice assessment first, then a fuller question set. Review why each wrong option does not meet the requirements.

Are you ready?

  • You can explain which Microsoft framework a recommendation comes from.
  • You can choose between two plausible designs using the requirements in a case study.
  • You can cover identity, SecOps, infrastructure and data, not just your own specialty.

Prepare for exam day

Choose the checklist for your test-centre or online appointment.

Before going to the test centre

  • Bring a current government-issued ID whose name matches your certification profile.
  • Arrive about 15 minutes early for check-in.
  • Store your belongings as instructed.
  • Skim each case study once, then reread the relevant requirements for every question.
  • Use Microsoft Learn to confirm a detail, not to learn a topic. The clock keeps running.
