Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of designing DevOps solutions, including source control, build and release pipelines, security and compliance, and instrumentation.

AZ-400 runs 100 minutes (120 if it includes labs), and Microsoft says most of its exams have 40 to 60 questions. Several answers often work and you pick the one Microsoft recommends, with a case study and, for some candidates, a lab. We compared the main options on official coverage, case-study practice and price.

Most people should start with Microsoft's free practice assessment. Add MeasureUp for the closest official questions and Tutorials Dojo as a cheap second bank. No practice test simulates the lab, so use Microsoft's free labs too.

AZ-400 practice assessment

Official questions with a rationale and a documentation link for every answer in your score report. It shows the exam's question style, but not its length, case studies or labs.

Great fit if you want a free read on the exam's style and your weak areas before spending anything.

Poor fit if you need volume or a timed full-length run; use MeasureUp.

Closest official questions

AZ-400 Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions Practice Test

Microsoft's official practice-test partner. Timed certification mode and customisable practice mode, with explanations for right and wrong options and score reports by skill area. Content was last updated in August 2024.

Great fit if you want the closest official question wording and detailed explanations, and can pay for 30 or 60 days of access.

Poor fit if you want long-term access for one price; Tutorials Dojo gives a year for $15.

Cheap second bank

AZ-400 Microsoft Azure DevOps Engineer Expert Practice Exams

Timed, review, section-based and randomised modes with explanations and reference links, including dropdown, drag-and-drop and hotspot items. The review mode gets praise, but the question pool is small.

Great fit if you want a low-cost bank with good explanations to use after the free assessment or alongside MeasureUp.

Poor fit if you want volume; candidates see repeats quickly, so pair it with MeasureUp.

Case-study practice

AZ-400 DevOps Engineer Expert Practice Exams

A bank built by Microsoft MVP Aleksi Partanen, with an explanation and further-reading link for each question. Timed full-length exams and case studies are on the paid plan; free sample questions let you try it first.

Great fit if you want case-study practice, or will also sit other Microsoft exams on the same plan.

Poor fit if AZ-400 is your only exam; at $199 a year it costs far more than Tutorials Dojo.

What to look for in a AZ-400 practice test

  • Match the July 2026 outline. Microsoft updated the English AZ-400 on July 27, 2026, with minor changes to traceability, scanning and monitoring. Build and release pipelines carry 50-55% of the exam, so look for plenty of YAML, GitHub Actions, Azure Pipelines and deployment-strategy questions.
  • Expect scenario questions where more than one answer works. Recent passers say many questions had several plausible answers and you had to pick Microsoft's recommended practice. Choose banks that explain why each wrong option is worse, as MeasureUp and Tutorials Dojo do.
  • Plan for a case study and a possible lab. Microsoft says role-based exams may include labs and gives 120 minutes for exams that might. Candidates report anything from no lab to one with 8 to 12 tasks, and none of these practice products reproduces it.
  • Check the update date and the size of the bank. MeasureUp's AZ-400 test was last updated in August 2024, and Tutorials Dojo's pool is small enough that candidates saw repeats. Use two sources so you do not run out of fresh questions.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual AZ-400 questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. Microsoft's exam policies count brain dumps as cheating and let Microsoft revoke your certifications and bar you from future exams. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use AZ-400 practice tests

  • Take the free assessment cold. Do Microsoft's practice assessment before you study heavily, then read the rationale for every question, including the ones you got right.
  • Log misses by exam area. Track pipelines, source control, security, instrumentation and processes separately. A strong pipelines score can hide weak spots in permissions, service connections or Azure Monitor.
  • Practise the lab skills by hand. Do Microsoft's free AZ-400 labs in a real Azure DevOps organisation and GitHub account. Candidates say the exam lab tasks were not the ones in those labs, but passers credit them for the portal and pipeline skills.
  • Practise searching Microsoft Learn. The exam lets you open learn.microsoft.com, except Q&A and practice assessments, and the clock keeps running. Practise finding an answer in under a minute, and do not rely on it for every question.
  • Treat high practice scores as a floor. Candidates have failed after perfect MeasureUp scores and passed after scoring 92% on the free assessment. Judge readiness by whether you can explain each answer, not by one number.

AZ-400 practice test FAQ

Is there a free AZ-400 practice test?

Yes. Microsoft Learn offers a free AZ-400 practice assessment with unlimited retakes, and you need to sign in to your Learn profile. CertiAce also has free sample questions, and Microsoft's exam sandbox lets you try the question types.

Are AZ-400 practice tests harder than the real exam?

Candidates usually call Microsoft's free assessment easier than the exam. MeasureUp is the closest, but some people have scored very high on it and still failed, so use it alongside hands-on practice.

Does AZ-400 have labs, and can I practise them?

Microsoft says some role-based exams include labs and does not publish which ones. Candidates report both cases; practise with Microsoft's free AZ-400 labs, because no practice-test product simulates the lab.

How many AZ-400 practice tests should I take?

There is no official number. Most passers in Reddit threads combined the free assessment with one paid bank, then reviewed every miss against Microsoft Learn.
