GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH) Practice Tests

Validates practical skills in detecting, investigating and responding to security incidents, including attacker techniques, credential attacks and exploitation.

GCIH is 106 questions in 4 hours, open book with printed materials only: mostly multiple choice plus a block of hands-on CyberLive tasks. We compared the main options on exam-engine realism, lab practice and price.

Most people should use GIAC's own practice test, the only one on the real exam engine; two come with an exam attempt added to SANS training. Cheaper banks add multiple-choice volume only, so build your index first and use tests to check it.

Official exam rehearsal

GIAC GCIH Practice Test

A full-length simulation in GIAC's real exam engine, CyberLive tasks included, with explanations for missed questions and a star rating for each objective. The bank is small, so a second test repeats some questions.

Great fit if you want to test your index, pacing and CyberLive skills under real exam conditions before you sit the exam.

Poor fit if you want volume; the bank is small and repeats, so a second or third test adds less than the first.

Extra multiple-choice volume

GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH) Exam Prep MCQs 2026

Six tests of 249 multiple-choice questions on GCIH topics, with no labs or tools. It has only six ratings so far (4.2 average), so there is little reader feedback to go on.

Great fit if you have used your two official tests and want cheap extra multiple-choice drills on attack and response concepts.

Poor fit if you want CyberLive or exam-engine practice; use GIAC's practice test.

What to look for in a GCIH practice test

  • Prefer the engine you will sit in. GIAC's practice tests run in the real exam engine and include CyberLive tasks when the exam has them. Candidates describe them as close to the real exam, and no third-party product reproduces the engine or the lab questions.
  • Count the tests you actually get. Two practice tests come when you add the exam attempt to a SANS course; a standalone $999 attempt includes none, and a retake brings no new ones. Extra tests cost $399 each, and the two in a bundle stay tied to your attempt and extend with it.
  • Expect a small bank with repeats. GIAC says its question bank is limited, so a second test repeats some questions, and its practice tests never contain real exam questions. A third test adds little.
  • Treat multiple-choice banks as extra drills. The exam has 106 questions, and a practice-test report counted 95 multiple choice and 11 CyberLive. Third-party GCIH sets are multiple choice only, and one candidate who tried a Udemy set found it nothing like the exam.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual GCIH questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. GIAC's exam integrity policy bans any use of exam dump sites and lets GIAC revoke your certifications and bar you from future ones. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use GCIH practice tests

  • Start the index on your first read. Log book, page and keyword as you go in a sheet you can sort A to Z, and tab each book. Index tool names, commands and options rather than section titles, and add both names for anything you would look up two ways.
  • Index the labs separately. Make one row per lab with the tools and main steps. Candidates say CyberLive tasks follow the lab workbook closely, and a lab index is what saves time on them.
  • Use the first test to repair the index. Take it with your index open, mark every question your index did not answer, and add the topic, not the question, since GIAC forbids copying questions out. Re-read objectives with low star ratings, and do not take two tests in one day.
  • Run the second test on exam rules. Use printed books, notes and index only. Watch the clock: the CyberLive tasks come last and take real time, and one candidate had to reset a stalled VM.
  • Bring only what is allowed. Printed books, notes and an index are allowed; electronics are not, and printouts that look like practice questions are prohibited. GIAC says workstation space is limited, so tab the books and keep the index compact.

GCIH practice test FAQ

Are there free GCIH practice tests?

GIAC does not publish free GCIH sample questions. Its free CyberLive demo is a recorded walkthrough of the exam engine, and practice tests cost $399 each unless two come with your SANS course bundle.

Are GCIH practice tests like the real exam?

Most candidates say yes. Several report scoring within about 10 points of their practice result, though one says the real exam draws on its own bank, so few practice questions come back.

How many GCIH practice tests should I take?

Two is the usual number, the pair that comes with a course bundle. Take the first to find gaps in your index and the second as a dress rehearsal on exam rules.

Can I use my index in the GCIH exam?

Yes. GIAC allows hardcopy books, handwritten or printed notes and an index. Electronic files and devices are not allowed, and neither are printouts that look like practice questions.
