A good GICSP course teaches ICS architecture, attacks, defenses and incident response, and prepares you to find answers fast in an open-book exam with hands-on CyberLive tasks. We compared the options on exam alignment, practice and price.

Take SANS ICS410 when your employer pays; the exam questions follow its books. If you are paying yourself, use the ProjectEngPro Udemy course for structured coverage of every area and add the Brooks and Craig book as an ICS reference.

4.6(54 ratings)

How to choose a GICSP course

  • Know the exam is built on ICS410. GIAC names ICS410 as the best preparation, and its books are the ones the exam questions follow. You can still buy an attempt without the course, since no course, degree or experience is required.
  • Prepare for an open-book exam. GICSP is 82 questions in three hours, and you can bring printed books and notes. Build an index as you study so you can find answers quickly.
  • Get hands-on practice for CyberLive. The exam includes tasks in live virtual machines. ICS410 has 15 labs and a CTF; if you study without it, practise basic packet and command-line work yourself.
  • Fill your weaker side first. If you come from IT, learn PLCs, HMIs and the Purdue model early. If you come from controls engineering, start with networking and Windows and Linux hardening.

Recommended GICSP course combinations

  • Employer pays: SANS ICS410 ($9,230); adding a GIAC attempt ($999) brings two GIAC practice tests.
  • Paying yourself: ProjectEngPro's course ($20), SecurityPracticeTest's free sets, then its 10 full-length tests ($15).
  • Want a reference to index: Brooks and Craig's book ($30 Kindle) with ProjectEngPro's course, and SecurityPracticeTest's full-length tests ($15).
  • Experienced in OT: The Brooks and Craig book for your index, SecurityPracticeTest's full-length tests ($15), and GIAC's official practice test ($399) as a final check.
