Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer (PDE) Exam Guide
Validates knowledge of designing, building and operating data processing systems on Google Cloud, from ingestion to analysis.
The exam tests data engineering decisions across the whole lifecycle, from design and ingestion to storage, analysis and operations. Learn the core services in depth, build a few pipelines, then practise choosing between services for cost, scale, latency and governance.
1Understand the exam
Syllabus
Section 1Designing data processing systems22%
1.1Designing for security and compliance
1.2Designing for reliability and fidelity
1.3Designing for flexibility and portability
1.4Designing data migrations
Example scenario: A bank must keep customer data in one region and mask account numbers for analysts. How would you design the datasets and access?
Section 2Ingesting and processing the data25%
2.1Planning the data pipelines
2.2Building the pipelines
2.3Deploying and operationalizing the pipelines
Example scenario: Sensor events arrive out of order and up to ten minutes late, but dashboards need one-minute totals. How would you handle this in a streaming pipeline?
Section 3Storing the data20%
3.1Selecting storage systems
3.2Planning for using a data warehouse
3.3Using a data lake
3.4Designing for a data platform
Example scenario: An app needs single-digit millisecond reads of user profiles keyed by ID at very high volume. Which store fits, and how would you design the row key?
Section 4Preparing and using data for analysis15%
4.1Preparing data for visualization
4.2Preparing data for AI and ML
4.3Sharing data
Example scenario: A dashboard query scans a large table every few minutes and costs keep rising. What would you change first?
Section 5Maintaining and automating data workloads18%
5.1Optimizing resources
5.2Designing automation and repeatability
5.3Organizing workloads based on business requirements
5.4Monitoring and troubleshooting processes
5.5Maintaining awareness of failures and mitigating impact
Example scenario: A nightly Spark job runs for one hour on a cluster that sits idle the rest of the day. How would you cut its cost?
A company needs a serverless data warehouse for petabyte-scale analytics queried with standard SQL. Which service fits?
BigQuery
Cloud SQL
Memorystore
Cloud Bigtable
Show answer
BigQuery. It is Google Cloud's serverless analytical warehouse for SQL over very large datasets. Cloud SQL suits transactional workloads, Memorystore is a cache, and Bigtable is a wide-column store.
Choose all the correct answers from the options; two or more answers are correct.
CertUp example
Analysts need to query a BigQuery dataset that contains personal data without seeing the raw values. Which TWO actions help?
Mask or tokenize the sensitive columns with Sensitive Data Protection
Restrict access to sensitive columns with IAM and column-level policies
Grant analysts the BigQuery Admin role
Copy the table to a public bucket
Show answer
Mask or tokenize the sensitive columns, and restrict access to them with IAM and column-level policies. Analysts can then query the data without seeing the personal values.
Eligibility and booking
Create a CM Connect account, choose the exam and delivery method, then pick a Pearson VUE time and pay. Your CM Connect legal name must match your ID exactly.
Read the exam guide and try the sample questions, then follow one course while building small pipelines. Finish with timed practice and documentation reading on the services you miss.
Most candidates spend 50–110 hours. Plan for the low end if you already build data pipelines on Google Cloud; add time if streaming or Google Cloud data services are new to you.
1Understand the examRead the syllabus and format, check you’re eligible and pick a target date.4 h
3Learn the core conceptsWork through one main course or book, topic by topic.41 h
4Practice with mock examsTake timed practice tests and review every mistake.21 h
5Prepare for exam dayBook the exam and check the ID and delivery rules.4 h
3Learn the core concepts
Use one main course with labs, and lean on product documentation for services the course only touches.
Compare services side by side. Keep a table of storage and processing services with their latency, scale, cost model and best use. Most questions come down to one of those trade-offs.
4Practice with mock exams
Start with Google's sample questions. Then use timed sets and check every explanation against the product documentation.
Reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours ahead to avoid a late fee. After a fail, wait 14 days, then 60 days, then a year; you get up to four attempts in two years.
One passer listed Datastream, Dataplex, Analytics Hub, BigQuery time travel and partitioning, Bigtable row keys, Cloud Storage autoclass, Memorystore tiers and CMEK key handling alongside the core pipeline services. Another found topics that the official learning path did not cover.
Commenters describe the exam as BigQuery-heavy and architectural, with hard choices between workable fixes such as scaling Dataflow workers or changing BigQuery partitioning.
A candidate who had already passed Associate Cloud Engineer and Professional Cloud Architect prepared for this exam in 10 days of long daily sessions, focusing only on the new data services in the exam guide.
