Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Exam Guide
Validates knowledge of strategic HR leadership, workforce planning, talent management, total rewards and HR information, safety and security.
The SPHR tests whether you can lead HR as part of the business: set people strategy, use data, manage risk and design programs that support the organization’s goals. Most questions are short scenarios where several answers are reasonable HR actions and the best one fits the business strategy. Use one main course or guide, then spend most of your time on practice questions and reviewing why the best answer wins.

CertUp example
The CEO plans to expand into three new states within a year. What should the senior HR leader do first?
Assess workforce needs, labor-market conditions and legal requirements in each state
Redesign the pay structure for all current employees
Start campus recruiting in every state
Reduce the HR budget to fund the expansion
Show answer
Assess workforce needs, labor-market conditions and legal requirements in each state. HR strategy follows from the business plan and the conditions it faces.
Select every correct answer; the question tells you how many to choose.
CertUp example
Select TWO measures that best show whether a new onboarding strategy is working.
New-hire retention at 90 days
Time for new hires to reach full productivity
Number of onboarding slides produced
Cost of welcome gifts
Show answer
Retention at 90 days and time to productivity. Both measure outcomes for the business; the other options measure activity or cost.
Type a number, word or short phrase to complete the sentence.
CertUp example
A training program costs $50,000 and produces $80,000 in measurable savings. What is the net return on investment, as a percentage?
Show answer
60%. Net ROI is (benefit - cost) / cost, so (80,000 - 50,000) / 50,000 = 60%.
Drag each item to its correct position or category; the question is correct only when every placement is right.
CertUp example
Drag each metric to the question it answers.
Turnover rate
Time to fill
Revenue per employee
Are we keeping our people?
How quickly do we hire?
How productive is our workforce?
Show answer
Turnover rate - are we keeping our people; time to fill - how quickly do we hire; revenue per employee - how productive is our workforce.
Read a short business situation, then answer a series of questions that depend on it.
CertUp example
Scenario: Two business units with different pay structures are merging. Question 1 of 3: What should shape the combined pay strategy first?
The merged organization's strategy, budget and talent needs
The pay structure of the larger unit
Each manager's preference
Last year's market survey for one unit only
Show answer
The merged organization's strategy, budget and talent needs. Total rewards should support the business plan rather than simply copy one unit.

Professional-level work means using independent judgment, having decision-making authority and being accountable for results. HRCI audits applications at random and can ask you to document your experience.
Apply online with your education and HR experience and pay $595. HRCI usually decides within one business day, or ten if your application is audited. You then have 180 days to schedule and take the exam with Pearson VUE. Testing is available year-round.
Take a timed practice set first. Your score by area shows whether you need to learn content or mostly practise strategic judgment.
Most candidates spend 50–120 hours. Plan for the low end if you already lead HR strategy and programs; plan for the high end if leadership and strategy or total rewards sit outside your role.

Choose one main resource that follows the 2024 outline. SPHR is less about memorising law than PHR, so you can move to questions sooner.
Answer as the senior HR leader. When several answers are sound HR practice, choose the one that supports the business strategy, follows the right sequence (analyse before you act) and involves the stakeholders who decide.
4Practice with mock exams
Most of your score depends on scenario judgment, so practise with full explanations and review every miss. Use timed 140-question exams before you book.
Passers describe choosing the answer that supports the organization’s strategy over one that is correct HR procedure but stays inside HR. One commenter put it as answering "the way your CFO is going to make you answer".
An August 2026 passer narrowed most questions to two options, then picked the one at the right stage: gather data first if the problem is new, and involve the stakeholders who influence the outcome.
Practise with situational questions, not law drills.
The same passer dropped a question bank that leaned on HR law and used scenario-based practice exams instead. Others report passing mainly with mock exams and reviewing every miss.
