CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-003) Practice Tests

Validates practical skills in planning, performing and reporting penetration tests, from scoping and reconnaissance to exploitation and post-exploitation.

PenTest+ PT0-003 is up to 90 questions in 165 minutes: multiple choice plus a few performance-based questions (PBQs). Many hand you a command, log or script and ask what it does or what to run next. We compared the main options on question style, PBQ coverage and price.

Start with CompTIA's free five-question sample, then use Jason Dion's six timed exams for volume and Pocket Prep for short drills. Pair them with hands-on tool practice, because candidates say the real exam goes further than the practice sets.

PenTest+ (V3) Practice Test

Five questions from CompTIA with an answer key but no explanations. They show the real style: reading Nmap options, interpreting a CVSS and EPSS table, and completing a short script.

Great fit if you want to see CompTIA's own PT0-003 wording and tool-and-script style before spending anything.

Poor fit if you need volume, explanations or a timed full run; use Dion or Pocket Prep.

Timed full exams

CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-003) 6 Practice Exams

The set most candidates name first: six timed, multiple-choice exams with feedback on every question and a score by domain. Questions run wordier than the real exam, and the real exam leans harder on commands and code.

Great fit if you want many full-length timed questions with feedback and a domain breakdown to find weak areas.

Poor fit if you want PBQ practice or wording close to CompTIA's; add the free CompTIA sample and the Sybex questions.

Study on your phone

PenTest+ PT0-003 Question Bank

A large bank of short quizzes and a mock exam in an app, with progress shown by domain. Candidates use it to refresh tools and attacks, not as their only source.

Great fit if you study in short sessions on your phone and want lots of questions to drill by domain.

Poor fit if you want a one-time purchase or PBQ practice; use Dion's exams and CompTIA's sample.

Book plus questions

CompTIA PenTest+ Study Guide, Exam PT0-003 (3rd edition)

A study guide with end-of-chapter questions, practice exams and access to Sybex's online test bank, so you learn and practise from one source.

Great fit if you want one purchase that gives you a reference book and exam-style questions.

Poor fit if you want a large timed question volume; use Dion or Pocket Prep.

Objective drills

CertMaster Practice for PenTest+ (PT0-003)

CompTIA's own practice tool with timed and untimed tests, objective assessments and mastery scores for each domain. Candidates who passed used it together with other question banks, not alone.

Great fit if your school or employer provides it, or you buy CompTIA's practice-and-voucher bundle, where it costs $14 more than the voucher with retake alone.

Poor fit if you would pay $209 on its own; Dion and Pocket Prep cost far less.

What to look for in a PenTest+ practice test

  • Match the exam code. PT0-003 (V3) launched on December 17, 2024, and CompTIA's page estimates its retirement around 2027. Buy products that name PT0-003: Udemy and other marketplaces still list PT0-002 sets, and some titles mention both.
  • Expect tool output, commands and scripts. The exam is up to 90 questions in 165 minutes, and candidates report 70 to 75 questions with 5 or 6 PBQs. They describe many items as reading a log, command or script and choosing the fix, so favour sets with real command output over definition questions.
  • Know that practice sets run easier than the exam on tools. Several passers say no practice exam matched the exam's command syntax, HTTP requests and code reading. Treat a practice score as a map of weak domains, not a prediction.
  • Check the domain weights. Attacks and Exploits carries 35% of the exam, Reconnaissance and Enumeration 21%, Vulnerability Discovery 17%, Post-exploitation 14% and Engagement Management 13%. Pick products that report your score by domain.
  • Plan for PBQ practice separately. CompTIA's sample has no PBQ and the sets above are multiple choice, so use CompTIA's PBQ overview and lab work for the simulations.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual PT0-003 questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. CompTIA's candidate agreement counts using brain dumps as misconduct and lets CompTIA revoke every CompTIA certification you hold. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use PenTest+ practice tests

  • Take one exam cold as a diagnostic. Do CompTIA's free sample first, then Dion's exam 1, before you study heavily, and read the explanation for every miss.
  • Build a tool sheet from your misses. For each tool you get wrong, write what it does, a typical command and what its output looks like. Candidates single out dig, nslookup, whois and theHarvester output, HTTP GET and POST requests, and Nmap options.
  • Practise commands in a lab. Run the tools in your own lab or on platforms that allow it, such as TryHackMe or Hack The Box, because several passers say syntax and code reading were the gap that practice exams did not close.
  • Do full timed runs late. In the last two weeks, sit full 165-minute exams. Candidates advise flagging a PBQ and returning to it, and several did the multiple-choice questions first.
  • Read your scores against the product. Dion's questions are wordier than the real ones, so a high score does not show command fluency. Avoid retaking an exam until you have forgotten the answers.

PenTest+ practice test FAQ

Are there free PenTest+ practice tests?

Yes. CompTIA publishes five free PenTest+ (V3) questions with an answer key, and Pocket Prep lets you try 30 questions free after you create an account. Neither is a full-length exam.

Are PenTest+ practice tests harder than the real exam?

Candidates mostly say the real exam is harder on commands, scripts and tool output than the practice sets, which are easier on that but wordier. Dion's tests are the ones most often called verbose.

How many PenTest+ practice tests should I take?

There is no official number. Candidates in Reddit threads commonly work through Dion's six exams plus one question bank such as Pocket Prep or the Sybex questions, and review every miss before retesting.

Do PenTest+ practice tests include PBQs?

Dion's Udemy set is multiple choice, and CompTIA's sample has none, so none of these gives you real PBQ practice. Candidates report 5 or 6 PBQs on the exam, often on HTTP requests, tool output and scripts.
