Validates knowledge of leading Six Sigma projects, including the DMAIC method, advanced statistics, team management and organizational deployment.
The exam checks that you can lead a DMAIC project and the people on it: choose and deploy projects, manage a team, then measure, analyze, improve and control with advanced statistics. It is open book, so learn the concepts first, then build a tabbed reference you can search quickly across a 4-hour sitting.

AImpact on stakeholders
BBenchmarking
CBusiness measures
IIITeam management15 questions
ATeam formation
BTeam facilitation
CTeam dynamics

IVDefine20 questions
AVoice of the customer
BBusiness case
CProject management (PM) tools
DAnalytical tools
Example scenario: Sponsors want to “reduce rework in the plant.” What would a usable problem statement, scope and SMART goal look like, and who must agree to the charter?
VMeasure25 questions
AProcess characteristics
BData collection
CMeasurement systems
DBasic statistics
EProbability
FProcess capability
Example scenario: A gauge R&R study shows 35% of tolerance consumed by measurement error. What would you do before collecting baseline capability data, and why?
VIAnalyze22 questions
AMeasuring and modeling
BHypothesis testing
CRisk analysis and management
DAdditional analysis methods
Example scenario: You have 40 results from each of three suppliers. Which test compares their means, which assumptions would you check first, and what does a significant result tell you?
VIIImprove21 questions
ADesign of experiments (DOE)
BLean methods
CImplementation
Example scenario: You can test three factors at two levels but only have budget for 4 runs. Which experimental design fits, and what do you give up?
VIIIControl17 questions
AStatistical process control (SPC)
BOther controls
CMaintain controls
DSustain improvements
Example scenario: A control chart shows seven points in a row above the centre line. What does that signal, and what would you check before adjusting the process?
IXDesign for Six Sigma (DFSS) framework and methodologies6 questions
Multiple choice. Choose the single best answer from four options.
CertUp example
A Black Belt wants to compare average cycle time across four suppliers, with 30 orders from each. Which test fits?
Paired t-test
One-way ANOVA
Chi-square test of independence
Two-sample test for proportions
Show answer
B. One-way ANOVA. It compares means across more than two independent groups; a t-test handles only two.
Eligibility and booking
Projects and experience required to sit the exam
Completed Six Sigma projects with signed affidavits
Required
Your project champion signs an affidavit for each project. Projects need hands-on work and measured before-and-after financial benefit; classroom or mock projects do not qualify.
Two projects
Two completed projects with two signed affidavits. No years requirement.
One project plus experience
One completed project with a signed affidavit and 3 years of full-time paid work in the Black Belt Body of Knowledge.
Send signed affidavits to cert@asq.org within one week of applying, or ASQ cancels your application and refunds the fee minus the $130 application fee. Projects older than two years are accepted if they used Six Sigma tools. You do not need CSSGB first, and ASQ grants no education waivers.
Apply on asq.org for a testing window, pay the fee and send your signed affidavits within one week. After approval, ASQ emails a Prometric eligibility ID so you can book a test centre or remote appointment. CSSBB runs in odd-numbered months, and your eligibility covers three consecutive windows from the one you choose. The next window open for new applications is January 2027; apply by December 7, 2026.
Read the Body of Knowledge and try a short practice set first. Spend most of your time on the sections where you score lowest, which is often the statistics.
Most candidates spend 60–120 hours. Plan for the low end if you have led projects and use statistics regularly; add time if DOE, regression or non-normal capability are new.

The ASQ handbook is written to the Body of Knowledge and doubles as your open-book reference. Add a video course if you prefer guided lessons.
You can walk through each DMAIC phase and the tools used in it.
You can choose the right hypothesis test, experimental design and control chart for a scenario.
You can find any Body of Knowledge topic in your reference within a minute.
You finish a timed 150-question set with time to review flagged questions.
5Prepare for exam day
Bring accepted ID and bound references, and follow the checklist for your delivery route.
Before travelling to Prometric
Before testing with ProProctor
Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals cannot test and lose the fee.
Bring valid government-issued photo ID; the name must match your scheduling notification exactly.
Bring bound references only; staff inspect them before you enter.
Bring a silent, non-programmable calculator or use the on-screen one.
Belongings go in a locker; scratch paper and pencils are provided.
Run the Prometric system readiness check when you book and again shortly before the exam, and install the software the day before, especially on a Mac.
Use a stable, preferably wired connection. Connection failures on your side mean a $130 reschedule fee.
Have valid government-issued photo ID and your bound references ready.
Scratch paper and pens are not allowed; use the on-screen scratchpad.
You may take up to three 10-minute breaks; tell the proctor before leaving the camera view.
Change an appointment at least five days ahead on Prometric’s site; the fee is $130.
There are no scheduled breaks at a test centre, and the clock keeps running if you leave the room.
A May 2025 passer calls the handbook the source of about 95% of exam content, read it once with notes, and used its index heavily during the exam. They began serious study five weeks out, ramping from 5 to 20 hours a week.
The question bank is closer to the exam than the study guide.
Two passers say the study guide questions are simpler and more straightforward than the exam, while the ASQ question bank matches its style better, though its explanations can be weak. One advises doing all three sets.
Both passers used a calculator for about five questions. One skipped calculation and chart questions on the first pass and returned to them; the other used the full time on ambiguous best-answer items.
One remote candidate passed Prometric’s system check the night before, but the software still failed on exam day on a Mac and was fixed with eight minutes left.
