ITIL Foundation Practice Tests

Validates foundational knowledge of ITIL concepts, the four dimensions, guiding principles, management practices and continual improvement.

ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, mostly terminology and light application, and the ITIL Value System alone carries 40% of the marks. We compared the main options on exam-style wording, version coverage and price.

Start with Andrew Ramdayal's free 40-question video mock, add a low-cost question bank, then use PeopleCert's one-attempt Official Mock Exam as a final check. Skip ITIL 4 material.

Free full mock

Full-length ITIL 5 Mock Exam

Andrew Ramdayal works through a full 40-question Version 5 mock on video and explains why each answer is right or wrong. Pause at each question and answer before you hear his.

Great fit if you want a free, timed-feeling 40-question run with explanations before you spend anything.

Poor fit if you want to be scored automatically or need more than one paper; use his Udemy set.

Six timed exams

ITIL Foundation Version 5, 6 Practice

Six 40-question exams with a 60-minute timer and an explanation for every answer, covering the Version 5 topics and the four question styles. A candidate calls it hard and a closer match to the exam than the official practice papers.

Great fit if you want volume and a timer for the price of a lunch, with a bank harder than the official sample papers.

Poor fit if you want PeopleCert's own wording; add the Official Mock Exam.

Final official check

ITIL Foundation (Version 5) Mock Exam

PeopleCert's timed, marked mock on its real exam interface, with a report of weak areas. Candidates find it harder than the sample papers and close to the real wording, and you can take it once.

Great fit if you want a final readiness check on PeopleCert's own system before booking the exam.

Poor fit if you want repeat attempts or a cheap first diagnostic; use Ramdayal's or Dion's sets.

Randomized app exams

ITIL 5 Foundation Practice Exam Pack

Randomized exams in Dion's practice app, with detailed explanations and unlimited attempts for a year. An optional $99 Pass Guarantee buys your retake voucher if you pass six practice exams and then fail.

Great fit if you want fresh randomized exams on repeat for $30, or you value the pass-guarantee safety net.

Poor fit if you want a published question count or Version 5-specific candidate reports; Ramdayal's Udemy set has both.

What to look for in a ITIL Foundation practice test

  • Buy Version 5 material, not ITIL 4. ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is the current exam. PeopleCert still sells ITIL 4 Foundation and plans to retire all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027, but the Version 5 syllabus has its own Value System, an eight-activity lifecycle and new topics on AI and value streams, so ITIL 4 question banks teach the wrong model.
  • Check the questions follow the real weights. Candidates are tested on seven topics, weighted roughly 30% key terms, 10% four dimensions, 10% lifecycle, 40% Value System, 5% value streams and 2.5% each for AI and other frameworks. Revise to those weights, not to a bank's own question counts.
  • Expect four question styles. The exam uses standard, negative, missing-word and list questions (pick two), all multiple choice, with 26 of 40 correct needed. Pick sets that include all four and explain why each wrong option is wrong.
  • Know what each tier tests. PeopleCert's Official Mock Exam is the closest guide to the real wording; third-party banks run harder and are worded differently. Candidates who passed call third-party mocks useful practice for vocabulary.
  • Plan for enough papers. The official mock gives one attempt, so a set of several 40-question exams or a randomizing pack gives you the repetition to drill terms.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual ITIL Foundation questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items, not practice. Use products that write their own questions and explain every answer, so you learn the reasoning the exam tests.

How to use ITIL Foundation practice tests

  • Read the syllabus before you start. The syllabus lists the seven topics and weights, so you know that the Value System and key terms decide most of the exam. Many candidates call the exam easy once they have learned the definitions.
  • Do one paper cold, then fix definitions. Start with the free video mock, write down every term you missed and relearn it from the official book or your course before the next paper.
  • Read every explanation. Candidates say some questions are worded to make you second-guess, and the explanation shows what the wording is looking for.
  • Go for comfortable margins on third-party mocks. Candidates who passed report scoring around 30 to 33 out of 40 on Ramdayal's mocks before the exam. Treat that as a rough guide and test it on a paper you have not seen.
  • Save the Official Mock Exam for last. You get one attempt, so take it when you think you are ready, review the topic report afterwards and revise the weak areas before booking the real exam.

ITIL Foundation practice test FAQ

Are there free ITIL Foundation practice tests?

Yes. Andrew Ramdayal's full 40-question Version 5 mock is free on YouTube. PeopleCert's own sample papers come with its exam bundle and eLearning rather than as a separate free download.

Should I practise for ITIL 4 or ITIL 5 Foundation?

ITIL 5. Version 5 is the current exam, ITIL 4 Foundation is due to retire on 31 December 2027, and the two syllabuses differ enough that ITIL 4 questions do not prepare you for Version 5.

Are ITIL Foundation practice tests harder than the real exam?

Candidates mostly call the real exam easy to moderate, mainly vocabulary, but say its wording can be tricky. PeopleCert's mock and Ramdayal's sets are as close to the real exam as practice gets, and some third-party banks run harder.

How many practice tests should I take?

There is no official number. Most candidates who passed combined a free mock, one or two question sets and the Official Mock Exam, and kept studying until they passed fresh papers comfortably.
