Project Management Professional (PMP) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of project leadership, team management and delivery across predictive, agile and hybrid approaches.

The PMP exam is 180 questions in 240 minutes: multiple choice, multiple response, drag-and-drop and, since July 9, 2026, a case-study section. Good practice has to rehearse both the long "what should the project manager do" scenarios and the case studies. We compared the main options on question style, simulator realism, volume and price.

PMI has no free question bank, so most people should start with a free timed set to find their weak domain, then use PMI Study Hall as their main bank and add one cheaper simulator for extra reps.

Official question bank

PMI Study Hall (Essentials or Plus)

PMI's own question bank, rebuilt for the July 2026 outline. Candidates find its questions wordier and harder than the real exam, and it is the product passing candidates name most.

Great fit if you want PMI-written questions with the right wording and a timed full exam to rehearse pacing.

Poor fit if you still need the concepts taught from scratch (take a course first) or want a cheaper second question bank (see TIA).

Final official check

PMP Practice Exam

One full-length simulation in PMI's question style and timing, with explanations and results by domain.

Great fit if you want one extra PMI-written full exam as a final readiness check after your main practice.

Poor fit if you need more than one full exam to practise on; Study Hall gives two or three plus mini exams for less than twice the price.

Free timed sample

Free PMP Practice Test (2026 Exam)

A short timed test written to the 2026 outline, including a case scenario. It asks for your name, email and phone before you start.

Great fit if you want a free first look at the new question style and a quick read on which domain to work on.

Poor fit if you need full-length exams or a large bank; it is a readiness check only (see Study Hall).

Case-study walkthroughs

David McLachlan PMP practice question videos

He reads each question aloud and explains how he eliminates options. His case-study and PMBOK 8 videos match the July 2026 exam; older sets cover the earlier outline.

Great fit if you want free practice on case-study questions and want to hear how to reason through scenarios.

Poor fit if you want a scored, timed exam with a domain report; use Study Hall or a simulator for that.

Video explanations

TIA PMP Exam Simulator

Every question has a video explaining why the right answer is right and the others are wrong. The cheapest large bank of the paid options.

Great fit if you learn well from video explanations and want a large, low-cost bank after your main course.

Poor fit if you want the closest match to PMI's wording; candidates say it is easier than the real exam and Study Hall, so pair it with Study Hall.

Second question bank

PMP Practice Exams (PMBOK 8)

A browser-based simulator from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, with explanations that cite PMI references and tracking by domain. A free demo is available.

Great fit if you want a mid-priced simulator with domain quizzes and explanations that point back to PMI references.

Poor fit if you want the closest PMI wording; candidates describe PMTraining as close to or slightly easier than Study Hall, so use it as a second bank.

Unlimited fresh exams

PMP Exam Simulator

The unlimited mode builds a fresh full exam from the bank each time, so you can keep doing full runs without repeats.

Great fit if you want many fresh timed runs and a free trial before paying.

Poor fit if you want PMI's own wording first; start with Study Hall and add this for extra runs.

What to look for in a PMP practice test

  • Built for the July 9, 2026 exam, not the old outline. The exam is now 180 questions in 240 minutes, weighted People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26% (it was 42/50/8). A bank written for the old outline will under-test business environment, so look for the new weights on the product page.
  • Case-study sets, not just single questions. The new exam opens with a case-study section: a long scenario followed by several questions, and candidates report being asked about the same case again later. Most third-party banks are standalone multiple choice, so look for case scenarios and the other formats PMI lists (multiple response, matching, drag-and-drop).
  • Explanations that say why the other options are wrong. Most PMP questions have two answers that sound reasonable, and the skill being tested is picking the better one. Prefer a product that explains every option, such as TIA's video explanations or Study Hall's per-question breakdowns.
  • Enough fresh questions for two or three full runs. A full exam is 180 questions, and retaking one you have seen measures memory, not skill. PMI's practice exam is a single test, while Study Hall has two or three plus mini exams and the larger third-party banks run from 1,200 to 2,200 questions.
  • Official wording first, third-party volume second. Candidates say Study Hall questions are wordier and harder than the real exam, and describe simulators such as TIA as easier. Use PMI's questions to judge readiness and a cheaper bank for extra reps.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual PMP questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. Before the exam you confirm to PMI that you have seen none of its questions, and PMI can cancel your score, revoke your certifications and ban you from its exams. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use PMP practice tests

  • Start with a short diagnostic. Take a free timed set or the first Study Hall question sets by domain before you review anything, so your study time goes to the domain where you miss most.
  • Review every explanation, including lucky guesses. Passing candidates describe the real skill as choosing the better of two reasonable answers. For each miss, write why the answer you picked was worse, not only why the key is right.
  • Track weak areas by domain and task. PMI's results and your own tally should show People, Process and Business Environment separately. Business Environment is a much bigger share than before, so do not let a strong Process score hide a weak spot there.
  • Rehearse the case-study opening and pacing late. Do at least one full 240-minute run near your exam date, with a note of where you should be at each break. Candidates report that Study Hall's breaks do not match the real exam's, so make your own checkpoints; the exam allows about 80 seconds per question.
  • Compare scores within one product, and do not memorise repeats. Candidates who passed often scored lower in Study Hall than they did on easier simulators, so judge progress by your trend within each product. Once you remember a mock's answers it stops measuring anything; move to fresh questions.

PMP practice test FAQ

Are there free PMP practice tests?

Yes, but PMI does not publish a free question bank (its sample PDF has three questions from an older exam). Training Camp's free 50-question test and David McLachlan's YouTube case-study and PMBOK 8 videos are written for the July 2026 exam.

Are PMP practice exams harder than the real exam?

Candidates most often say PMI Study Hall is wordier and harder than the real exam, mainly because of its Expert-level questions, though some report the real exam was just as hard. Third-party simulators such as TIA are generally described as easier than both.

How many PMP practice exams should I take?

There is no set number. Two or three full-length exams on questions you have not seen, each followed by a thorough review, is a sensible target for most people, and extra mini exams by domain are better than repeating a mock you remember.

What question types are on the new PMP exam?

Case or scenario sets with several questions each, standard multiple choice, multiple response (choose two or three), matching, drag-and-drop, pull-down lists and image-based matching at test centers. Most practice banks are mainly multiple choice, so use Study Hall or a case-study video set to see the case format.
