Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) Courses

Validates foundational knowledge of HR talent acquisition, learning and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and compliance.

A good aPHR course teaches all five HRCI functional areas from the ground up, because the exam needs no HR experience. We compared the main options on coverage, format, practice included and price.

Most people new to HR should start with HRCI's Coursera certificate, which has one course for each exam area. Choose Mometrix for one low-cost book, HRCI's Cert Prep for the official platform, HR.com for a live class and DistinctiveHR for a complete self-study package.

How to choose a aPHR course

  • Cover all five functional areas. The aPHR tests talent acquisition, learning and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and compliance and risk. HRCI's Coursera certificate has one course for each.
  • Match the format to your experience. If HR is new to you, a guided course or a live class helps more than a book. If you already work in HR support, a study guide and practice exams can be enough.
  • Check what practice is included. HRCI's platform, the HR.com class, the DistinctiveHR package and the Mometrix guide all include practice questions or tests. The Coursera certificate has quizzes and projects, and HRCI sells its practice exam separately for $50.
  • Compare the price of the official route. HRCI's own Cert Prep costs $449 with your exam application. DistinctiveHR's digital course costs $175 and Mometrix's guide $34.

  • Employer pays: HR.com's live class ($880), which includes 400+ practice questions, plus HRCI's $50 practice exam in the last week.

HRCI's Coursera certificate takes about 5 months at 6 hours a week, and the HR.com class runs 10 weeks. Plan for about 60 hours of preparation in total.
