Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) Practice Tests

Validates foundational knowledge of HR talent acquisition, learning and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and compliance.

The aPHR is 90 questions in 1 hour 45 minutes, 25 of them unscored, mostly multiple choice across five functional areas with a few fill-in-the-number items. We compared the main options on question volume, timed exams and price.

HRCI offers no free sample, so most people should start with Mometrix's free test, use Pocket Prep for daily volume, then take HRStudyPro's or HRCI's exam late to check wording.

Free aPHR Practice Test

A free practice test across the five aPHR functional areas, taken in the browser without an account. Mometrix sells its larger question sets only inside a paid course.

Great fit if you want a free first look at the five aPHR functional areas before paying for anything.

Poor fit if you need full-length exams or scores by area; use Pocket Prep or HRStudyPro.

Daily question bank

HRCI aPHR Exam Prep

Short quizzes by functional area, with weakest-subject, missed-question and timed modes, on phone or web. Passers often name it as their main question bank for the aPHR.

Great fit if you want daily practice in short sessions and progress tracking by functional area.

Poor fit if you want full-length timed exams; add HRStudyPro's two 90-question exams.

Timed full exams

aPHR Exam Prep: Practice Exams

Two full-length timed exams that mirror the 90-question format, with detailed explanations, a breakdown by area and randomized retakes. A larger bundle adds a question bank and study guides.

Great fit if you want exam-length timed practice for a one-time fee instead of a subscription.

Poor fit if you want hundreds of short daily questions for the price; use Pocket Prep or the larger bundle.

Official question style

aPHR Practice Exam

HRCI's own 50-question timed exam, with a score report by content area. You can reset and retake it, but the same 50 questions come back each time.

Great fit if you want to see how HRCI words its questions before booking, and have a bank like Pocket Prep for volume.

Poor fit if you need many questions; 50 repeat quickly, so use Pocket Prep or HRStudyPro.

Large exam volume

2026 aPHR HRCP Program (Online Edition)

A study program with 13 online exams, from a starting assessment to practice, timed and mock exams. The exams are only sold inside the program, with study text and flashcards.

Great fit if you want a study text and a long run of timed exams in one purchase.

Poor fit if you only need practice questions; use Pocket Prep or HRStudyPro.

What to look for in a aPHR practice test

  • Covers all five functional areas of the 2021 outline. Compliance and Risk Management (25%) and Employee Relations (24%) carry the most weight. Pick a bank that reports scores by area and teaches the federal laws behind hiring, pay, leave and safety.
  • Questions that give little context. One recent passer found the real questions vaguer than any study-guide quiz, with several where the wording left nothing to go on. Practise reading each stem for the single word that decides the answer.
  • Practice for the other formats too. HRCI lists multiple choice, multiple response, fill-in-the-blank, drag and drop and scenarios. A recent passer saw simple number entries and 'select two' items but no drag and drop.
  • Enough fresh questions for repeat full runs. The exam is 90 questions in 1 hour 45 minutes. Pocket Prep has 500 questions, HRStudyPro two 90-question exams and HRCP 13 exams, but HRCI's own set is 50 questions that repeat.
  • Official questions are few and cost extra. HRCI sells one 50-question exam for $50, non-refundable, and offers no free sample. Use it late to see HRCI's wording, not as your main bank.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual aPHR questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. HRCI's candidate agreement bans collecting or soliciting exam content and lets HRCI cancel your score and revoke all your HRCI certifications. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use aPHR practice tests

  • Start with a free diagnostic. Take the free Mometrix test or Pocket Prep's 30 free questions before studying, so your first weeks go to the areas where you miss most.
  • Review every explanation, including lucky guesses. For each miss, write why the best answer beats the one you chose. Passers describe questions that turn on one word, such as first, best or not.
  • Expect the real exam to differ from your materials. Several passers say practice exams were harder than the real test, and that topics they studied barely appeared while others had little prep. Study concepts and laws, not remembered answers.
  • Track results by functional area. Compliance and Risk Management and Employee Relations make up almost half the exam. Keep your own tally of weak areas, especially the federal laws.
  • Do one timed full run near the exam date. Practise 90 questions in 105 minutes and flag doubtful items to revisit, as passers recommend. Switch banks once you remember the answers.

aPHR practice test FAQ

Are there free aPHR practice tests?

HRCI does not publish a free sample test or practice exam. Mometrix has a free practice test with no account, and Pocket Prep includes 30 free questions.

Are aPHR practice exams harder than the real exam?

It depends on the product. Several passers say their book and course practice tests were harder than the real exam, while others found the real questions vaguer than any practice. Use practice scores to find weak areas, not to predict the result.

How many aPHR practice exams should I take?

There is no set number. Two or three full timed runs on questions you have not seen, each followed by a full review, is a sensible target, and short quizzes by functional area beat repeating an exam you remember.

What question types are on the aPHR exam?

Mostly multiple choice, plus multiple response, fill-in-the-blank with a number, drag and drop and scenarios. The exam has 90 questions, 25 of them unscored, in 1 hour 45 minutes.
