Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) Exam Guide
Validates foundational knowledge of HR talent acquisition, learning and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and compliance.
The aPHR tests whether you understand the basics of HR work and the US federal laws behind it: hiring, training, pay and benefits, employee relations and compliance. It is a knowledge exam, so expect definitions and straightforward situations rather than senior judgment calls. Plan on one course or study guide plus a question bank.

CertUp example
An employee asks what "employment at will" means. Which statement is accurate?
Either the employer or the employee can end the employment at any time, as long as the reason is not unlawful
The employer must give a written reason for every dismissal
The employee can be dismissed only after three written warnings
The employment ends automatically after one year
Show answer
Either side can end the employment at any time, as long as the reason is not unlawful. At-will employment does not remove protection against illegal discrimination or retaliation.
Select every correct answer; the question tells you how many to choose.
CertUp example
Select TWO items HR must collect from every new hire in the US.
Form I-9 for work authorization
Form W-4 for tax withholding
A signed non-compete agreement
Three professional references
Show answer
Form I-9 and Form W-4. Every new hire needs work authorization verified and tax withholding set; non-competes and references are not required for each hire.
Type a number, word or short phrase to complete the sentence.
CertUp example
A company spent $6,000 on recruiting and made 3 hires. What is its cost per hire, in dollars?
Show answer
$2,000. Cost per hire is total recruiting cost divided by the number of hires.
Drag each item to its correct position or category; the question is correct only when every placement is right.
CertUp example
Drag each law to the topic it covers.
FLSA
COBRA
OSHA
USERRA
Minimum wage and overtime
Continued health coverage after job loss
Workplace safety
Reemployment after military service
Show answer
FLSA - minimum wage and overtime; COBRA - continued health coverage after job loss; OSHA - workplace safety; USERRA - reemployment after military service.
Read a short HR situation, then answer a series of questions that depend on it.
CertUp example
Scenario: A retailer opens a second store and must hire 20 staff in six weeks. Question 1 of 2: Which step should HR complete first?
Write job descriptions that match the roles needed
Send offer letters to referred candidates
Run background checks on all applicants
Post the jobs on every job board
Show answer
Write job descriptions that match the roles needed. Sourcing and selection depend on a clear definition of each role.
Eligibility and booking
Apply online and pay $400. Once HRCI approves your application, usually within one business day, you have 180 days to schedule and take the exam with Pearson VUE. Testing is available year-round.
Skim the outline and try a short practice set to see which areas are new to you.
Most candidates spend 40–90 hours. Plan for the low end if you already work in an HR support role; plan for the high end if HR is new to you, especially employment law and compliance.

3Learn the core concepts
Choose one main resource. A course suits you if HR is new; a study guide is enough if you already work in HR.
A candidate who started with no HR background worked through HRCI’s Coursera program months before the exam, then spent a final week reviewing one area a day for 1–3 hours.
In a May 2026 thread about HRCI’s $449–$649 prep bundles, replies suggested a study guide such as Mometrix could be enough for aPHR, and noted HRCI sometimes includes its prep materials in promotions.
