Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of US privacy law, covering regulators, federal laws, government data access, workplace privacy and state laws.

CIPP/US is 90 multiple-choice questions in 150 minutes, 15 of them unscored. The questions test the details of federal sector laws, enforcement and the many state privacy laws, and candidates say they reward nuance over definitions. We compared the main options on official coverage, state-law drilling and price.

Use IAPP's 90-question practice exam as your checkpoint, then add Dr. David's or Privacy Bootcamp's larger bank to drill state law.

CIPP/US Practice Exam Digital

One 90-question exam in a PDF, some questions retired from the real exam, with an answer key by domain and subdomain and a rationale for each answer. Candidates disagree on how closely it matches the real exam.

Great fit if you want IAPP's own wording and a score by domain before booking.

Poor fit if you need hundreds of questions for repeated drilling; add Dr. David or Privacy Bootcamp.

Video plus 600 questions

Book plus test bank

IAPP CIPP/US Certified Information Privacy Professional Study Guide, 2nd Edition

A study guide with a year of online chapter reviews, two practice exams and flashcards. Candidates disagree on how hard its questions are, and one reported a law named incorrectly in the second exam.

Great fit if you want a book and a basic test bank in one purchase.

Poor fit if you want IAPP-style wording or heavy state-law drilling; use IAPP's exam and Dr. David.

What to look for in a CIPP/US practice test

  • Match the Body of Knowledge version. The current outline is CIPP/US Body of Knowledge v2.6.1, effective 1 September 2025. IAPP's practice exam page names no version, so prefer third-party sets that state their outline and show a recent update date.
  • Put state law first in your question bank. IAPP's blueprint gives Domain V, state privacy laws, 17 to 21 questions, second only to Domain I at 27 to 33. Several candidates who missed the pass mark say state law cost them most, so choose a bank that drills it.
  • Look for nuance, not definitions. A candidate who failed in 2024 said the questions went past definitions into why a law was enacted, who enforces it and what changed. Pick sets whose explanations cover those points rather than just naming the answer.
  • Check how recently a bank was updated. State laws change every year. A January 2026 candidate spotted a Udemy question that no longer matched current state law, so look at update dates and prefer banks maintained in 2026.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual CIPP/US questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. The IAPP's handbook says using dump sites breaks its pre-exam agreement and lets the IAPP invalidate results and revoke certifications. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use CIPP/US practice tests

  • Use IAPP's practice exam as a baseline. Its answer key breaks results out by domain and subdomain, so note where you are weakest. Candidates read it differently, with some scoring well and still failing, so treat it as a map of gaps.
  • Build a one-page table per law. Candidates who passed charted each federal statute on one page and learned state laws by comparing their similarities and differences.
  • Log misses by domain I to V. Write each miss against its domain in the blueprint and reread that section. Candidates who missed the pass mark most often name state law.
  • Finish with timed runs from a second publisher. In the last week or two, sit a full 90-question set under time using a different publisher's questions, so you meet a second style of wording before exam day.

CIPP/US practice test FAQ

Are there free CIPP/US practice tests?

Only in small amounts. IAPP sells its practice exam rather than giving it away, and free question sets online are small and unvetted, so plan on IAPP's exam plus one paid source.

Is IAPP's CIPP/US practice exam like the real exam?

Candidates disagree. Some call it the most similar practice option, while one candidate who failed said it did not reflect the real test and a 2026 candidate found it harder than expected. Use it for gaps and wording, not as a forecast.

How many CIPP/US practice tests should I take?

There is no official number. Most candidates take IAPP's exam plus a second bank, such as Dr. David's questions or Privacy Bootcamp's, and spend their time reviewing misses by domain.

What do CIPP/US exam questions look like?

The exam has 90 questions in 150 minutes, with a 15-minute break, and includes scenario sets where one passage supports several questions. IAPP reports results on a 100 to 500 scale with 300 needed to pass, which is not a percentage.
