Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Practice Tests

Validates knowledge of designing and managing security programs, including risk, architecture, access control, operations and software security.

CISSP is an adaptive exam of 100 to 150 questions in 3 hours, multiple choice plus advanced item types, with no going back. The questions are best-answer scenarios, so good practice has to train judgement, not recall. We compared the main options on question style, adaptive runs, volume and price.

Most people should start with ISC2's free flashcards and Destination Certification's free app. Add Quantum Exams for exam-style wording and adaptive runs, and the Sybex Official Practice Tests as a low-cost official bank.

Official CISSP Flash Cards

ISC2's own interactive flashcards across all eight domains, with instant feedback on each answer. They drill terms and concepts rather than exam-style scenarios.

Great fit if you want an official, free check on terminology before paying for a question bank.

Poor fit if you need scenario questions or timed practice; use the DestCert app or Quantum Exams.

Free scenario drills

DestCert Exam Prep app

Scenario-based CISSP questions with explanations, flashcards and progress by domain, with new free questions added weekly. Candidates say the wording is more exam-like than most apps, though some learn to spot answers from the phrasing.

Great fit if you want a large free bank of concept-and-judgement questions, especially alongside Destination's book or course.

Poor fit if you want exam-level difficulty or adaptive runs; add Quantum Exams.

Adaptive exam practice

Quantum Exams CISSP

A question bank plus full adaptive exams of 100 to 150 questions on a three-hour timer, with answer review, a domain graph and an ability-over-time graph. Candidates call its long, multi-domain questions the closest style to the real exam.

Great fit if you want adaptive full-length runs and exam-style wording and can take scores well below your usual.

Poor fit if you want a big drill bank or the lowest price; start with the DestCert app and the Sybex tests.

Official question bank

ISC2 CISSP Official Practice Tests, 4th Edition

The official-series book of 100 questions per domain plus four online 125-question exams. Candidates find the questions straightforward and recall-based, so they work for finding weak domains more than for exam feel.

Great fit if you want an official-series bank at a low price to find weak domains.

Poor fit if you want exam-style wording or adaptive runs; add Quantum Exams.

Study-guide drills

ISC2 CISSP app

Phone and web app with practice questions, flashcards and short articles drawn from Wiley's Sybex study guides, plus a readiness score and custom tests. Candidates describe it as recall-focused rather than scenario-based.

Great fit if you want a large bank for daily recall drills tied to the Sybex study guide.

Poor fit if you own the Sybex practice tests, which share much of its content, or you want exam-style scenarios; use Quantum Exams.

Technical deep dives

ExSim-Max for CISSP

Six full-length exams with a study mode that explains each answer and a simulation mode that follows exam timing. Candidates find the questions more technical than the exam's manager-style scenarios.

Great fit if you have a technical background and want a tough check with detailed explanations.

Poor fit if you want manager-style, exam-like wording; use Quantum Exams or the DestCert app.

Short phone sessions

ISC2 CISSP Question Bank

Quizzes, timed mode and mock exams in a mobile and web app, with explanations and a weakest-subject quiz. Candidates call the questions clear but easier than the real exam.

Great fit if you study in short sessions on your phone and want flexible, low-cost access.

Poor fit if you want exam-level difficulty; use Quantum Exams or the DestCert app.

What to look for in a CISSP practice test

  • Match the outline. The April 2024 outline applies to every exam until April 14, 2027. A new outline takes effect on April 15, 2027, with revised domain weights and new topics such as AI, so if you test after that date, buy products that name the new outline.
  • Know that the exam is adaptive. CISSP is 100 to 150 questions in three hours, you cannot return to an answer, and the exam can end early. Quantum Exams runs a full adaptive exam, and Destination Certification includes an adaptive simulator in its paid MasterClass; the other products here use fixed-length tests.
  • Look for best-answer scenarios. Real questions give four plausible options and ask for the best or first action, from a manager's point of view, and the exam also includes advanced item types such as drag-and-drop and hotspot. Candidates call LearnZapp and the Sybex books recall-based, Boson more technical, and Quantum Exams and DestCert closer to the exam's style.
  • Watch for overlap. LearnZapp draws on the same Wiley Sybex material as the Official Practice Tests, so buying both repeats content. Use the free DestCert app for volume and spend on a paid bank for style, not size.
  • Get results by domain. The eight domains carry 16%, 10%, 13%, 13%, 13%, 12%, 13% and 10% of the exam, so domain-level reports show where to review. Security and Risk Management is the largest at 16%.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual CISSP questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. ISC2's exam agreement bans accessing exam content before the exam and lets ISC2 cancel your score, revoke every certification you hold and bar you from earning more. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use CISSP practice tests

  • Take a diagnostic before heavy study. Work through ISC2's flashcards or a set of DestCert questions cold to see which domains are thin, then match the result against your own experience.
  • Explain every option. For each question, say why the best answer fits and why the other three fail, including questions you got right. Candidates who passed describe this far more often than counting questions.
  • Log misses by domain. Write each miss against its domain and objective, review that topic, then retest it. Avoid retaking an exam until you have forgotten the answers, because repeats inflate results.
  • Use results to find gaps, not to predict the outcome. r/cissp candidates consistently say no practice test matches the real exam, and Quantum Exams results usually run below real-exam performance. Treat the number as a guide to what to review.
  • Sit full runs late. In the last weeks, take full-length runs of 100 to 150 questions in three hours without going back. This builds the stamina and decision speed the real exam needs, and breaks use exam time.

CISSP practice test FAQ

Are there free CISSP practice tests?

Yes. ISC2 offers free official flashcards for all eight domains after a short sign-up form, and Destination Certification's free app has over 1,700 CISSP questions with explanations. Quantum Exams and LearnZapp also give free sample questions.

Are CISSP practice tests harder than the real exam?

It depends on the product. Candidates usually call Quantum Exams and Boson harder or more technical, and Pocket Prep and the Sybex Official Practice Tests easier and more recall-based. They also say no practice test reproduces the real exam's style exactly.

How many CISSP practice tests should I take?

ISC2 gives no number. Candidates typically combine one large drill bank, such as DestCert, LearnZapp or the Sybex tests, with a few full timed or adaptive runs near the end, and review every answer rather than chase repeat attempts.

Do CISSP practice tests use the adaptive format?

The real exam adapts to your answers and ends between 100 and 150 questions. Quantum Exams simulates this, while most other products give fixed-length tests, so do at least one adaptive-style run before exam day.
