HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) Practice Tests

Validates foundational knowledge of infrastructure as code, the Terraform workflow, configuration, modules, state management and HCP Terraform.

Terraform Associate 004 is a one-hour, online-proctored exam on Terraform 1.12 and HCP Terraform, with true/false, single-answer and multiple-answer questions. We compared the main options on question style, explanations and price.

Most people should start with HashiCorp's free sample questions, then use Bryan Krausen's practice exams as their main timed set.

Free first look

Terraform Associate (004) sample questions

Five official questions covering the true/false, multiple-choice and multiple-answer formats, with every option marked correct or incorrect. HashiCorp offers no official practice exam, so this shows the format and wording only.

Great fit if you want to see the real question types before you start studying.

Poor fit if you want a readiness check; five questions is too few, so move to Krausen's exams.

Timed full exams

HashiCorp Certified Terraform Associate 004 - Practice Exams

Six exams written to the 004 objectives, with explanations for right and wrong options and links to the HashiCorp documentation. Covers Terraform 1.12 and HCP Terraform topics such as workspaces, variable sets and policy enforcement.

Great fit if you want one main practice set with explanations for every option and an objective-by-objective review mode.

Poor fit if you need hands-on labs; this is a question set only, so pair it with your own Terraform projects.

Objective drills

HashiCorp Certified Terraform Associate (004) Practice Tests

Four 60-question practice tests plus eight section tests by exam objective, with a free 15-question test to try first. Aimed at the 004 exam, though parts of the listing still describe the older 003 exam.

Great fit if you want short drills by objective as well as full-length tests, or you already use Whizlabs.

Poor fit if you want a set clearly rewritten for 004; Krausen's exams are.

What to look for in a Terraform Associate practice test

  • Match the 004 outline and Terraform 1.12. HashiCorp retired the 003 exam on January 8, 2026; 004 tests Terraform 1.12 and adds HCP Terraform. Pick products that name 004 and cover HCP Terraform, because a set written for 003 will miss those topics.
  • Expect three question types. The exam is about an hour and online-proctored, and HashiCorp's sample page shows true/false, single-answer and multiple-answer items (the question says how many to pick). HashiCorp does not publish a question count; third-party exams run 57 to 60 questions each.
  • Look for explanations that cover every option. Passers call the exam fair if you have used the CLI and say the HashiCorp documentation is the source of its wording. Prefer sets that explain wrong answers and link to the docs.
  • Cover state, modules and HCP Terraform, not only commands. Pass reports single out the workflow, state and backends, module inputs and outputs, and HCP Terraform. A set with results by objective shows which of these to revisit.
  • Keep fresh questions for a second pass. HashiCorp's sample is five questions, and the paid sets run from about 240 to 342, so one pass uses most of a set. Use the official five first, then one full set, then a second bank.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual Terraform Associate questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items, not practice. Use products that write their own questions and explain every answer, so you learn the reasoning the exam tests.

How to use Terraform Associate practice tests

  • Start with the official five. They show the question types and wording at no cost. Then take one full practice exam cold as a diagnostic.
  • Reproduce every miss in a small configuration. Passers say hands-on CLI work beats theory. For each wrong answer, run the commands (init, plan, apply, state, import) in a scratch project until the behaviour is clear.
  • Log misses by the eight objectives. Tag each miss to its objective, for example state management, modules or HCP Terraform, and retest that area before the next full exam.
  • Time a full set late. Sit a full exam in one hour in the last week or two, since the real exam is timed and proctored. Move to a different set once you recognise questions.

Terraform Associate practice test FAQ

Are there free Terraform Associate practice tests?

Only a few. HashiCorp publishes five free sample questions with answers; full practice exams such as Bryan Krausen's and Whizlabs' are paid.

Are Terraform Associate practice exams harder than the real exam?

Passers describe the real 004 exam as fair and direct for people who have used the CLI, with a clear focus on workflow, state, modules and HCP Terraform. Reports do not rank the practice sets by difficulty, so judge a set by your scores per objective.

How many Terraform Associate practice exams should I take?

There is no official number. One full timed set after hands-on practice, with every miss reviewed, is enough for most people; add a second bank only when you run out of fresh questions.

What question types are on Terraform Associate 004?

True/false, multiple choice with one answer, and multiple answer, where the question states how many options to pick. The official sample page shows one of each type.
