CompTIA A+ Practice Tests

Validates foundational IT support knowledge across hardware, operating systems, networking, security and troubleshooting common technical problems.

A+ is two exams, Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202), each with up to 90 questions in 90 minutes and a few performance-based questions (PBQs) up front. We compared the main options on exam-style wording, PBQ coverage and price.

Start with CompTIA's free 10 questions per core and Easy Prep, then add Professor Messer's exams for exam-like wording and Jason Dion's for harder, higher-volume practice. Crucial Exams covers PBQs.

A+ V15 Practice Tests (Core 1 and Core 2)

Ten questions for each core in CompTIA's own wording, with an answer key but no explanations. Core 2 has its own page, linked from CompTIA's Core 2 exam page.

Great fit if you want to see CompTIA's question style for each core before paying for anything.

Poor fit if you need volume, explanations or a timed full-length run; use EasyPrep or Messer.

Free explained quizzes

Free CompTIA A+ Practice Test

Topic quizzes for all nine domains across both cores, plus timed 90-question practice exams. Every answer comes with an explanation, and there are iOS and Android apps.

Great fit if you want free, explained practice for both cores that also works on your phone.

Poor fit if you need PBQ practice or an official-style exam; add Crucial Exams or Messer.

Free topic drills

A+ Practice Tests (220-1201 and 220-1202)

Short online tests, 22 for Core 1 and 34 for Core 2, plus quizzes by topic and for acronyms. A score report at the end lists your responses.

Great fit if you want unlimited free checks on terms, ports and acronyms for each core.

Poor fit if you need exam-style wording, PBQs or a timed full run; use Messer or Crucial Exams.

Exam-like wording

Professor Messer A+ Practice Exams

Three 90-question exams per core with multiple-choice questions, some PBQs and a reason for each answer. It is a PDF, so you time and score yourself. Candidates call its wording the closest to CompTIA's.

Great fit if you use Messer's free videos and want exam-like wording and some PBQ practice at a low price.

Poor fit if you want auto-timed, auto-scored tests or more than 270 questions per core; add Dion's exams.

Timed full exams

CompTIA A+ Core 1 (220-1201) 6 Practice Exams

Six timed 90-question exams per core with detailed feedback and a score by domain. All multiple choice, so no PBQs. Candidates call the questions wordier and harder than the real exam.

Great fit if you want many timed, full-length questions with feedback and can handle harder wording.

Poor fit if you need PBQ practice or wording close to the real exam; add Messer or Crucial Exams.

PBQ practice

CompTIA A+ Practice Tests and PBQs

A bank of 1,000 questions per core with flashcards and PBQs, 12 for Core 1 and 7 for Core 2. One plan covers every IT exam on the site. Candidates call its PBQs basic but useful.

Great fit if you want PBQ practice and a large bank for both cores in one plan.

Poor fit if you want a one-time exam pack; Messer's $30 PDFs or Dion's $20 courses cost less.

Study on your phone

CompTIA A+ Question Bank

Quizzes and mock exams in an app and on the web, with 567 Core 1 and 563 Core 2 questions. It has explanations, progress by subject and a weakest-subject mode.

Great fit if you study in short sessions on your phone and want a big bank to drill by subject.

Poor fit if you want a one-time purchase or PBQ practice; use Messer's exams and Crucial Exams.

Objective drills

CertMaster Practice for A+ (Core 1 and Core 2)

CompTIA's own timed and untimed practice tests, objective quizzes and PBQs, with a mastery score for each exam objective. Candidates find it harder and more confusingly worded than the real exam.

Great fit if your school or employer provides it, or you buy CompTIA's Practice and Exam Bundle, where it adds $30 to two vouchers with retakes.

Poor fit if you would pay $279 on its own; Messer, Dion and Crucial Exams cost far less.

What to look for in a A+ practice test

  • Buy for the V15 exam codes. The current exams are Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202), which launched in March 2025. Old 220-1101 and 220-1102 sets are still on sale, so look for 1201 or 1202 in the product title.
  • Plan practice for each core separately. Each exam is up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, and you can take them in either order. Messer and Dion sell one set per core; Pocket Prep, EasyPrep, Crucial Exams and CertMaster cover both.
  • Treat PBQ practice as a separate need. Candidates who failed Core 1 say their practice was multiple choice only and the PBQs, which come first, sank them. Messer's exams, Crucial Exams and CertMaster include PBQs; Dion's Udemy sets do not.
  • Want explanations, not just a score. Core 1 has five domains and Core 2 has four, with troubleshooting at 28% of Core 1 and operating systems and security at 28% each in Core 2. Pick products that explain wrong options and report by domain.
  • Keep a larger bank in reserve. Messer gives 270 questions per core and CompTIA's free sets give 10, so they run out fast. Pair a small exam-style set with a bigger bank such as Dion, Pocket Prep or Crucial Exams.
  • Skip sites selling "real exam questions." Sites promising actual A+ questions or a guaranteed pass are selling leaked or copied items. CompTIA's candidate agreement counts using brain dumps as misconduct and lets CompTIA revoke every CompTIA certification you hold. A real practice test explains why each answer is right; a dump only lists answers.

How to use A+ practice tests

  • Take a short diagnostic for each core. Try CompTIA's 10 free questions for the core you will book first, then read the explanation for every miss and every guess in a fuller set.
  • Study and test one core at a time. Finish Core 1 practice before you book it, then repeat for Core 2. Log each miss against its domain and go back to that topic before retesting.
  • Practise PBQs on their own. Rehearse ordered troubleshooting steps and settings tasks with Messer's, Crucial's or CertMaster's PBQs. Flag the PBQs on exam day, answer the multiple-choice questions, then return to them.
  • Run full timed exams late. In the last week or two, sit full 90-minute exams. Several candidates passed after scoring lower on Dion's exams than they expected, so one low result is not a verdict.
  • Use products for what they are good at. Messer's wording is closest, Dion's harder wording builds a margin, and ExamCompass or EasyPrep suit quick topic drills on ports, cables and commands. Avoid retaking an exam until you have forgotten the answers.

A+ practice test FAQ

Are there free A+ practice tests?

Yes. CompTIA publishes 10 free V15 questions for each core with an answer key, Easy Prep offers free explained quizzes and timed practice exams, and ExamCompass has 22 Core 1 and 34 Core 2 tests with no sign-up.

Are A+ practice tests harder than the real exam?

Candidates usually say Dion's and CertMaster's tests are harder and wordier. Messer's are called closest in wording, though a few found them easier. Many say the real PBQs are harder than any practice ones.

Do A+ practice tests include PBQs?

Some do. Messer's exams include PBQs, Crucial Exams lists 12 for Core 1 and 7 for Core 2, and CertMaster includes them, while Dion's Udemy exams are multiple choice only. Candidates say practice PBQs rarely match the real ones closely.

Do I need separate practice tests for Core 1 and Core 2?

Yes, because they are separate exams with different domains. Messer sells each core for $30, Dion's courses are $19.99 each, and Pocket Prep, Easy Prep, Crucial Exams and CertMaster cover both cores.
